WHAT IS CORE CURRICULUM? • The Core Curriculum Initiative is a New York City standard program that aims to provide a common core of rigorous, high-quality curricula and instructional materials to NYC classrooms. • Core Curriculum was first introduced in 2003 with Mathematics, Early Childhood (K-3) Literacy, and Classroom Libraries. In the subsequent years it has expanded to include Science, Social Studies and 6-8 ELA Classroom Library Additions. • The Initiative provides both curriculum materials and Professional Development to schools and teachers and has focused primarily on grades PreK-9.

WHO CAN ORDER CORE CURRICULUM MATERIALS? • Existing NYC Public Schools • Initiators (usually purchasing secretary and business managers) • NYC New Schools (opening September 2009) • The Core Curriculum Response Team has a list of all new schools and will work with each school individually to order Core Curriculum materials. • NOTE:Non-Public Schools and Charter Schools are not included in the Core Curriculum Initiative.

CORE CURRICULUM Initiators/Approvers • Who is the School’s Initiator? • The school’s Initiator is usually the School’s Purchasing Secretary, Business Manager or a School Staff Member appointed by the School Principal. • The Initiator must have access to the FAMIS purchasing portal in order to place a Core Curriculum order. • If an initiator has forgotten his/her password, please contact 718-935-5100 for a password reset. • Initiators can change/edit an order that has been submitted for approval as long as the school’s approver has not approved the order. • Who is the School’s Approver? • The school’s approver is usually the Principal or an authorized decision maker appointed by the Principal such as an Assistant Principal. • The Approver must have access to the FAMIS purchasing portal in order to approve Core Curriculum orders. • Approvers can approve orders waiting in the order queue but cannot edit individual orders placed by their School’s Initiator, nor can they place orders for Core Curriculum materials.

CORE CURRICULUM ORDERING PERIOD • Initiators and Approvers may begin to place and approve their school’s order between: • Monday, April 6, 2009 through Friday, May 1, 2009 • NOTE #1:Schools needing to place orders after the May 1st Deadline must contact the Core Curriculum Response Team at 718-935-3334 or email at Curriculum@schools.nyc.gov • NOTE #2:All orders submitted after the initial ordering period with our Response Team MUST be approved in writing by the school’s Principal.

HOW ARE CORE CURRICULUM MATERIALS FUNDED? • Consistent with past practice, 60% of a participating school’s FY ‘10 New York State tax Levy (NYSTL) allocation will be withheld to cover the cost of NYSTL-eligible Core Curriculum materials. • At the end of Core Curriculum ordering (sometime in late October), if the value of a school’s Core Curriculum order is less than the 60% withheld, the remaining balance will be returned to the school as discretionary funds. • If the value of ordered materials is greater than the 60% withheld, no additional funds are taken from the school to cover their school’s Core Curriculum order, but they WILL NOT receive any of their initial 60% NYSTL allocation withholding.

HOW ARE CORE CURRICULUM ALLOCATIONS DETERMINED? • Each school’s allocation is determined based on their student projected register provided by Office of Student Enrollment. • If schools experience an increase in student register and further allocations are needed, they must submit their increase for allocations request in writing (along with their current register)to: Curriculum@schools.nyc.gov • The Core Curriculum Response Team will then work with the Core Curriculum Office to determine each school’s individual need before increasing allocations. • PLEASE NOTE: The Core Curriculum office will check each schools request for an increase in student register with the Office of Student enrollment to ensure the increase is accurate and precise.

  9. WHAT’S NEW FOR CORE CURRICULUM IN Year 7? • Social Studies • For Existing Schools • Grades 5 and 8 ordering is NEW for Year 7. Schools should order NEW MATERIALS for the option your school selected last year. • You should continue to order CONSUMABLE materials ONLY for the option your school selected last year, for grades 4 and 7 where applicable. NOTE #1: Schools who wish to change their Social Studies option in 09-10 (e.g. from Option A-Comprehensive Textbook Program to Option B-Trade Book Program) may do so, but will no longer be able to purchase previously ordered materials for Grades 4 and 7 from the Core Curriculum Ordering Application. NOTE #2: Allocations for Supplemental Realia Material are only available for NEW Grades in Year 7 (Grades 5 and 8). • For New Schools • New Schools opening in Fall 2009 are invited to participate in all available grades (4-5 and 7-8)

  10. WHAT’S NEW FOR CORE CURRICULUM IN Year 7? Continued…. • Science • For All Schools • Grades K-2 ordering is NEW for Year 7. Schools will only have a choice to order NEW MATERIALS between two (2) options: • Option A- Kit-based • Option B- Textbook Based NOTE:Existing schools who have purchased Option C (blended option) in previous years will be able to continue ordering their “Option C” consumables for grades 3-5 and 6-8. • For New Schools • New Schools opening in Fall 2009 are invited to participate in all available grades (K-2, 3-5 and 6-8)

  11. WHAT’S NEW FOR CORE CURRICULUM IN Year 7? Continued…. • ELA – NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL Classroom Libraries Plus Collection for Grades 6-8 • ALL SCHOOLS • You are invited to participate in all available grades (6-8) • Library Collections include: • Empowerment and Resilience Collection: Fiction and Non-Fiction title that empower students to think for themselves. • Love and Relationships Collection: Themes of Love, Family and Friendships that resonate with adolescents. • Take Action and Change the World Collection: Fiction and Non-Fiction titles that ensure to challenge students to make a difference in the world. • Creativity and How Things Work Collection: Texts centered on music, celebrity, sports and entrepreneurship. • Dual Language Collection:These collections include titles in English and a second language which align to the four themes, and are particularly suitable for supporting English language learners, bilingual students and striving readers. Collections are available in: Spanish – English; Haitian Creole – English; Chinese – English; French – English; and Bengali – English. NOTE #1: Schools will be able to order according to the allocation granted per grade. NOTE #2: Schools will be able to order 4 out of the 5 Collections per Classroom.

Core Curriculum Waivers • Existing and New Schools can apply for waivers, by grade span, for the following subject areas: • English Language Arts • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies • Schools not granted a waiver within a grade span/subject area are required to participate in the ordering of Core Curriculum Materials • Exempt, waivers and passes granted in previous yearsextend into 2009-10. The extensions apply onlyfor the grade span in which they were granted (K-5, 6-8, or 9-12). • Schools that would like to expand their waiver beyond the subjects or grade spans initially granted must submit a waiver application for those new subjects/grades.

  13. DELIVERY OF CORE CURRICULUM MATERIALS • All Core Curriculum Materials are TENTATIVELY scheduled to be delivered from July 20 – August 7, 2009 • Annual School Walkthroughs (to inform Central Offices of School readiness) are TENTATIVELY scheduled for August 31st – September 4th, 2009
