Mission Statement • SubCo is a specialist service provider for Asian elders and their carers • SubCo offers quality support services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate and explores innovative ways of working effectively • SubCo assists and empowers Asian elders and their carers to advocate for other services to meet their individual needs

Background • SubCo was formed in 1993 • SubCo is well known for its expertise in the provision of culturally appropriate services to Asian elders and their carers • The aim is to provide day care provisions to frail Asian elders of the sub-continent over the age of 55 years, with a particular focus on those who are frail, isolated and house bound

Service Provision • Day Care Services • Range of health promotion activities • Befriending • Advocacy • Advice & information • Home visits and support for carers • A programme of social and cultural • Drop in activities including books, dvd and video loans • Asian Meals Service (luncheon club and a meals on wheels delivery service) • Volunteers Programme • Intergenerational work • Development Work • Training & Support Programmes • SubCo runs a number of services from 2 different sites

  5. Barriers to Delivering Services • Relationship with statutory agencies • Goal posts constantly changing

  6. Servicing Needs & Complexities... • When they initially made contact with SubCo, Asian elders said they felt isolated and depressed and very helpless about their cases • After contact with SubCo they felt more in control of their lives and more able to make choices and decisions

Servicing Needs & Complexities... • Accessing basic services assisted Asian elders to live more independently in the community and generally lead more active and involved lives • Most of the Asian elders still felt they needed support, but felt more confident and were more aware of services and support and what they needed to do to access these

  8. Impact on Asian elders’ lives... Mrs N. is a 73 years old who has been living alone for the past 17 years. Her medical conditions include: constipation, arthritis in her hands and feet and has paranoid psychosis. She also complains of the dizzy spells and feeling sick. She has poor vision and very limited mobility.

  9. Impact on Asian elders’ lives... “I am extremely happy because I now have support to get out and about” “My faith in statutory services has grown and I feel more independent” “My life has improved and I now have a place I can call home and freely invite my friends and family”

  10. Impact on Asian elders Lives.... “They didn’t just sort out my problem, they helped me get back in touch with the community” “I feel more able to deal with some of these things now by myself”

  11. Sustainability • Funding for 2 years or more • Robust Communication Systems • Quality mark: IIP, PQASSO, other quality marks or registrations as they develop • Policies and Procedures
