Chinese Language Summer Program at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU), Chung Li, Taiwan Goal: -To enhance the Chinese language capability and Chinese cultural awareness for the participants by having a six-week Chinese Language Summer Program Location:To be held at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) at Chung-Li, Taiwan, in the summer of 2009 Duration: July 1, 2009 to August 11, 2009

  2. Where is CYCU?

  3. Contents • Six hours per day and five days per week for learning Chinese language and experiencing Chinese culture: about two thirds of time is for the former and one third for the latter. • Three sessions of learning Chinese language for the participants, grouping into three levels (Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced) of Chinese capabilities. • Sessions with 2 participants for every tutor will be provided to help the participants practice Chinese intensively. The tutors are upper-division undergraduates or graduate students at Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, CYCU.

  4. Contents (continued) • On Saturday, tours of the cultural, historical, and scenic sites will be arranged. • On Sunday, program participants will be free to go to church or do other activities.

  5. Notes • Both traditional and simplified versions of Chinese, together with Han-yu pinyin and Mandarin phonetic symbols will be covered. • Resident counselors will be available to guide and help the participants in their daily learning and living. • Free housing will be provided to the escorts of various groups of participants • Participants need to have their visa (to Taiwan, R.O.C.) ready for the duration of the Program • Program intended for participants in 8th ~ 12th grades (those who will be in the 8th~12th grades in fall 2009)

  6. Cost and Facilities • For the 6-week Chinese Language Summer Program, the cost is US$ 2,100 per participant to cover the expenses for the participants while they are in Taiwan. (Participants pay for their round-trip airfares from the United States to Taiwan.) • While the participants are in Taiwan, CYCU will provide for them the airport transportation to CYCU, living quarters (4 persons per room in the dormitory with air-conditioning, toilet, and shower in each room), and food. Laundry, study, and exercise spaces are available in the commonly-shared places of the dorm. Dorm for male is one-year-old and for female, three-year-old. Traveling (and insurance during traveling) and tickets to tour the cultural, historical, and scenic sites will also be provided. In addition, health clinic will be available at CYCU for participants for minor treatments. Participants can use the indoor swimming pool (8-channel and 50-m) at a cost. • Participants need to apply their own visas (to Taiwan) and carry their own health insurance in case major treatments are needed).
