I Some Background:Education in the Spotlight • National call for higher standards and accountability • Top item on Indiana legislature’s and governor’s agendas right now • Focus on teacher and student performance • test scores: SAT, ACT, NAEP, ISTEP • driver’s licenses tied to staying in school • Block 4, Charter Schools, vouchers, portfolios • Shift away from assuming competence based on credits and knowledge alone

I What’s NCATE? & “NCATE State”? • NCATE = National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education • Composed of representatives from many professional organizations • Main accrediting organization for teacher education programs nationwide • Indiana is one of many “NCATE States” • State accreditation standards are identical to NCATE accreditation standards • Teacher education programs in Indiana must meet these standards--not voluntary

What’s INTASC? • Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium • Not a government agency • Created to help new teachers • Made up of representatives of many professional organizations • Sponsored by Council of Chief State School Officers • Ten Principles (on next slide) • Focus on evidence of • Knowledge • Performance • Attitudes (Dispositions)

II INTASC “KDP” • Each of the ten principles is followed by • Knowledge indicators • Disposition indicators • Performance indicators • Why dispositions? • Nominations for teacher of the year focus on attitudes not credits or isolated skills • Knowledge and skills are prerequisites but not sufficient • Attitudes, values, ethics, modeling, encouraging --all crucial too

III What’s IPSB? • Indiana Professional Standards Board • Separate from Department of Education • (DOE focuses on standardized testing, curriculum, funding, snow day waivers, etc.) • Responsible for teacher education program accreditation • Responsible for teacher licensing • Several states have a PSB, and several are considering one
