Active Citizenship teaches you how to become a more POWERFUL CITIZEN of WHS. • We will learn to become powerful citizens of WHS by: • Improving our abilities with skills like reading, writing and research. • Studying the habits of mind that successful students have • Analyzing the power dynamics within the Weymouth Public Schools. • Learning how to cause change in your school.

Analyze the Power Dynamics of the death of Eric Garner • On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in Staten Island, New York City, after officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in what has been described as a "chokehold" • The New York City Medical Examiner's Office attributed Garner's death to a combination of a chokehold, compression of his chest, and poor health. • On December 3, 2014, a Richmond County (Staten Island) grand jury decided not to indict Pantaleo. • On July 13, 2015, an out-of-court settlement was announced in which the City of New York would pay the Garner family $5.9 million.
