  1. Age & Fertility: Chances of Conception What is age-related infertility? Age-related infertility is the decreased in fertility that occurs in men and women as they grow older. What this means is that as you grow older, your chances of having children and starting a family grow slimmer. While men suffer to a lesser extent, women experience a sharp decline in their ability to get pregnant as they grow older. Fertility treatment and assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) can help you overcome infertility, but if you cross a certain age, your options become severely limited. This is why regular gynecological and health exams (insert pearl link) are important to make sure you have a chance at starting a family. How does age-related infertility happen? In men, age-related infertility occurs later in life. As they grow older, their sperm quality falls. The testes shrink and grow soft and sperm shape and motility changes. This results in lowered fertility and chances of conception. However, men can delay these effects through a healthy diet and exercise routine. This usually occurs around the age of 60. Women however, can do nothing to delay their age-related infertility. Now as you age, the number of eggs you have reduces. By the time you reach your thirties your chances of conception start declining. As you grow older and approach menopause, your fertility declines sharply. Why does age-related infertility happen? As we’ve explored before, a woman is born with a certain limited number of eggs. If you’re a woman, these eggs will be released by your ovaries during your menstrual cycle, over the course of your life. If these eggs are left unfertilized, they are excreted by your body during your period, along with endometrial tissue. Infertility in women can occur as early as 10 years before menopause. If one year goes by without a menstrual cycle, women are said to be in menopause. Menopause occurs after a gradual fall in the regularity of your periods. By the time you’re 40, your chances of conception fall by more than 30%. Conceiving after 40 or 45 years of age can lead to your children being born with birth defects and other health disorders. What can I do about it? Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) can help you conceive if you suffer from infertility. IVF and other methods like Artificial Insemination can increase chances of conception with a fairly high success rate. IVF offers a good success rate for conception if you’re in your thirties. However, as you get older, your chances of conception fall even with assisted reproductive treatments. By the time you turn 45 your chances of conception via IVF fall by a wide margin. What if you don’t want to have children at a younger age, but still want to conceive later in life? In

  2. that case, freezing your eggs is a good option. Using artificial insemination and other related techniques doctors can give you a chance to conceive even as you grow older. Some of these techniques can offer you a chance at starting a family. Taking the right precautions today will protect your fertility for the future.
