  1. Part 1:What is a sentence fragment? Take notes on everything in red

  2. A sentencecommunicates a complete thought with at least 1 subject and 1 predicate • A fragment is a group of words that does not have a complete thought. • Cool. • At the party.

  3. We write sentence fragments because we often speak in sentence fragments! • When we answer a question: • Q: “What are you doing?” • A: “Eating.” • When we give a command: • “No headphones!”, “No running!”

  4. How to fix a sentence fragment

  5. In order to make the sentence a complete thought… • Add information • Rewrite the sentence • this may be as simple as removing or adding a single word !

  6. Fragments • After leaving the mall. • What pet dander? • Even though you learned this in 5th grade. • Romeo and Juliet, though desperately in love.

  7. Directions: “Fixing Fragments” Packet • Answer questions 1-9 • Place an “S” on the line before each number IF it is a complete sentence. • Place an “F”IF it is a fragment of a sentence. • Correct each fragment by adding information or rewriting in the space provided. • Each correction should be a complete sentence!

  8. Part 2: Run-on or “fused” sentences

  9. Run-on Sentences are... …2 independent clauses joined together without the correct punctuation and/or conjunctions.

  10. Examples of run-on sentences • They are not just really long sentences those are called rambling sentences. • Grammar is confusing it is also important. • Mrs. Asfour makes learning grammar fun her students just won’t admit it.

  11. 4 ways to fix a run-on (they’re the same as fixing a comma splice! 1) ; Semi-colon 2) . Period 3) Coordinating Conjunctions or FANBOYS 4) Subordinating Conjunctions (If, Because, When, After, etc...)

Review Terms • Comma splice • - is created when only a comma is used to connect 2 independent clauses • Independent clause • - a group of words that could be written as a complete sentence (contains ONE subject and ONE Predicate). • Dependent clause • a group of words that contain one subject and one predicate but CANNOT stand on its own: it does not complete a thought • Semicolon ; • - Joins 2 independent clauses if the 2 clauses are related.

Coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) • - Introduce or connect independent clauses • Subordinating conjunction • - Begins or connects a dependent clause to an ind. clause • Fragment • - a group of words that lacks enough information to do that. • Run-on • - 2 independent clauses that are not properly punctuated

Directions: “Fixing Fragments” Packet • “Fused Sentences” 209-210, Sentences 1-10 • Place an “C” on the line before each number IF it is a complete sentence. • Write “RO” on the line before each run-onsentence • Insert punctuation and/or conjunctions to properly separate clauses • You may have to change capitalization as well. • Some sentences require 2 punctuation corrections.
