  2. What is a Lion? • A lion is a mammal in the cat family. They are a predator to most animals that live in the grasslands. A lion has tan fur (the males have manes). A pride of lions are able to take down an elephant at night when they usually hunt.

  3. Inherited Traits • The lion’s beautiful tan skin. • Their loud roar. • Their ability to swim. • Walking with their heel not touching the ground. • The lion’s eye color.

  4. Instinctive Behaviors • To use their roar to warn of intruders. • To live in prides. • To defend the territory. • A new male that joins the pride usually kills all the cubs to make sure the future cubs have his genes. • The females live with a pride forever and the males stay for two to four years.

  5. Learned Behaviors • How to hunt their prey. • How to raise cubs. • To hunt at night usually. • To let the males eat first, the females next, last the cubs. • Learn to mate.
