  3. How to Produce Krypton-85 • krypton-84 + cosmic rays --> krypton-85

  4. Artificial Production • ~1940alarge production of krypton-85 caused by nuclear fission (nuclear weapon tests)

  5. Industrial Uses • Used in entertainment industries; discharge lamps, film lights, etc. • Used in cold-cathode voltage regulator electron tubes • Used to inspect aircraft components for small defects (krypton gas penetrantimaging) • Also used to detect leaks in piping IT FINDS CRACKS

  6. Medical Uses • Used to study the flow of blood (how fast the blood travels)

  7. Why is it Used? • Highly flammable = easy to ignite (lamps) • Wide-area atmospheric monitoring, krypton is best indicator for clandestine plutonium separations •  It can be combined with phosphors to produce materials that shine in the dark.

  8. Radiotoxicity • 440Bq of Kr-85 = 1Bq of radon-222 Kr-85

  9. NOT Superman's Weakness • Despite the similar sounding name, krypton-85 is NOT the same as kryptonite, which is a fictional element.
