  1. Nervous System Tina Remes Walters 2011

  2. Stimulus Any internal or external changes that brings about a response. Outside the body: noise light temperature Inside the body: hormones

  3. Homeostasis The regulation of steady, life-maintaining conditions inside of an organism. Examples: heart beat digestion

  4. Impulse Message carried by neurons.

  5. Neurons Nerve cells Parts: 1. Cell body 2. Dendrites receives impulses from the neurons and sends them to the cell body. 3. Axon carries impulses away from the cell body.

  6. Types of Nerve Cells • Sensory Neurons receives information and sends impulses to the brain and spinal cord. Message is then sent to the motor neurons.

  7. Types of Nerve Cells • Motor Neurons Impulses from the brain or spinal cord to muscles or glands. • Interneurons Relays messages to motor neurons from the sensory neurons.

  8. Synapses Space between Neurons

  9. Nervous System Central Nervous System • Brain • Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System • Nerves outside of the central nervous system • Connects the brain & the spinal cord to other parts of the body.

  10. The Brain • Coordinates all of your body activities. • 100 billion neurons • 10% of all neurons in the body.

  11. The Brain • Cerebrum a. Thinking b. Largest part of the brain. c. Impulses from senses are interpreted d. Stores memories e. Controls movement f. Cortex outer layer ridges and grooves

  12. The Brain • Cerebellum a. Stimuli from eyes, ears, muscles and tendons are interpreted. b. Coordinates voluntary muscle movement. c. Maintains muscle tone d. balance

  13. The Brain • Brain Stem a. Base of the brain. b. Connects brain to spinal cord.

  14. Parts of the Brain Stem 1. Midbrain 2. Pons • Medulla a. Involuntary muscles b. Heart beat c. Breathing d. Blood pressure e. Coughing and swallowing.

  15. Parts of the Brain 4. Spinal Cord Extension of the brain stem. Carries impulses from all parts of the body to the brain and back.

  16. Peripheral Nervous System • 12 pairs of nerves from brain—cranial nerves • 31 pairs of nerves from your spinal cord—spinal nerves. Bundle of sensory and motor neurons bound together by connective tissue.

  17. Peripheral Nervous System Somatic 1. controls voluntary action 2. cranial & spinal nerves that go from the central nervous system to the skeletal muscles Autonomic Involuntary Actions: heart rate breathing

  18. Reflexes • An involuntary, automatic response to a stimulus. • Controlled by spinal cord not brain. • You can’t control

  19. Drugs and the Nervous System • Depressants Slows the body’s activities • Stimulant Speeds up activities of the central nervous system. Caffeine
