  1. Work Experience Information Evening YEAR 10 Y10 Work Experience dates: 22nd April -3rd May 2013 Key contacts: Julie Kay, Careers Adviser/Work Experience Coordinator Claire Hurst, Careers Adviser/\Work Experience Coordinator

  2. Why do work experience? • gain confidence • learn about the world of work • experience going to work each day • explore careers/jobs • be inspired for the future • develop employability skills • references/weekend jobs/contacts

  3. Work Experience is not…. • cheap labour • a skive from school • a holiday for your teacher • a path to a sure job

  4. How does it work • HCS – online database of placements • Own Placement – students find their own placements by contacting employers direct. This will guarantee that they work in their preferred vocational area

  5. Tips on looking for a placement • Encourage your son/ daughter to look for their own placement • Persevere! You may not get the first placement you approach. • Go it alone – it is best if student’s search for placements independently and not with a friend as employers are less keen to take students in pairs/groups. • Think about the location??? • Families??

  6. Where to look for a placement • By foot: • Internet search: • -Asking friends & family • Yellow pages/directories • By Phone • By email/letter

  7. Work Experience Procedure • Deadline for own placement forms, Thursday 20th December 2012: Students must return their own placement forms by this date • January/ February: All students without an own placement select placements on the Webviewonline system • Student agreement Form: Parents and Students sign and return the agreement • Students contact the employer to confirm the placement and check if they need to attend a pre-interview/induction • All students will be visited by a member of staff within their two week placement.

  8. Vocational/Child Development • Any student studying child development as one of their options, MUST complete their work experience in this vocational area. • Students on motor vehicle, construction and hairdressing options are expected to carry out placements within their vocational area.

  9. Health & Safety • All placements are checked for health & safety through health & safety visits carried out by qualified person • Placements who do not pass the health & safety criteria will be “refused” • Students work a maximum of 38 hours (unpaid!) • Supervision always given • Risk Assessments & Job Descriptions are provided to the students

  10. Last year’s students placements • Animal Care • Vets • Design/PR • Farm/Stables • Hairdressers • Stansted Airport • Engineering • Banking • Charities • Local MP/Political • Pharmacy • District Council • Hospitals • Retail • Nursery Schools • Solicitors • Primary Schools • Offices • Construction • Mechanics • Accountants • Hotels • Performing Arts • Sport

  11. Feedback from employers “Stephen is the best student we’ve ever had. He was polite, helpful and courteous, always willing to do any job given to him and he picks things up really quickly” The work placement could not have been better. We would go so far as to say, when he has left school, if he is still interested in this business to contact us, and if we have a position available we would seriously consider employing him “ Beth has demonstrated excellent customer service skills and has given 100% to every task set. I would quite happily offer her a job once she turns 16 and has taken her exams”. “Toby– Really good, more thorough than some of the full timers!”

  12. FAQs • What happens if I miss the Own Find Form deadline or want to change my placement nearer the time? We cannot accept late forms, as there will be a charge of £80 • Are travel expenses or specialist equipment paid by the school? No, which is why it is important for students to check the job descriptions before they choose their placement. • What happens if the student is sick or absent during work experience? They should contact the school and the work experience placement to let them know. • What happens if I don’t like any of the placements on offer and have not found my own? You will be expected to come into school for 2 weeks to work with the premises team and will be expected to cover housekeeping duties, such as cleaning and litter picking.
