  1. I William Todd Akin was born in New York City, New York but spent his life in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. After college, he served in the Army Reserves and worked as a mange in his family’s steel company. He then went into politics and first served as a Representative, in the Missouri Congress, from 1988 to 2000. Since 2000 he has served as a Representative, for the State of Missouri, in the United States Congress. In 2012 Akin announced plans to run for a seat in the United States Senate. Then, on August 19, Akin made controversial remarks, during an interview for a local new station. When asked if a woman should be allowed to get an abortion if she impregnated by rape, Akin claimed that during what he phrased as a “legitimate rape” a woman’s body would not allow her to get pregnant. He claims were false, as over 30,000 women are impregnated by rape every year in just the United States. Many were also offended by Akin’s implying that women claimed to have be raped just to get an abortion, due to his use of he term “legitimate rape”. Many politicians, including those from his own party urged him to give up his Senate campaign. Although Akin later apologized, he is sill deserving of an ‘I’ for Ignoramus. Congressman Todd Akin
