  2. Early Years • Born March 6,1475 • In Caprese, Italy • His name has become synonymous with the word “masterpiece” • He died February 18, 1564 of a slow fever

  3. Early Years • He learned the art of painting in Ghirlandaio’s studio • Apprentice in a workshop of the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio at age 13 • He studied sculpture at a sculpture school in the Medici Garden • In Rome 1496-1498 he created his first over life size Bacchus

  4. Art • 1498-1500 he created marble Pieta when he was 25 he finished it. • Michelangelo’s high point of early style was when he built David out of gigantic marble in the years 1501-1504 • In April 1508 he was summoned back to Rome by Julius II (the pope)

  5. Art • His most stupendous work was the Sistine Chaple • Julius II asked him to paint twelve figures of apostles and some decorations on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. • He began in May of 1508 • Before he finished he uncovered it in August of 1511 • One of the largest painting that he ever did was the Last Judgement

  6. Art • The Last Judgment was to represent humanity face to face with salvation • It was finished in 1541 • He had a crowning achievement as an architect was his work at St. Peters Basilica, he was made chief architect in 1546

  7. Other Art work • He designed the Lauventian Library in 1520 • He built the tomb of Julius II • He made sculptures of Moses and the The Dying Slaves • He also designed the dome of the new Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome
