  3. Détente –a relaxation of tension with communist nations China – Nixon overturned nearly 20 years of US policy by recognizing the People’s Republic of China as the true China, and not Taiwan. His visit was a huge news story. USSR – Nixon became the 1st US President to visit the USSR. They agreed to increase trade, share scientific discoveries, and talk about reducing nuclear weapons S.A.L.T. – Strategic Arms Limitation Talks – agreements between the US and USSR to limit and even reduce the number of nuclear missiles in their arsenals

  4. Nixon’s Domestic Issues Nixon’ s 2nd Term in office was dominated by negative news for the administration Resignation of Vice President Agnew • Was discovered to have taken bribes as Governor of Maryland – resigned as VP • Gerald Ford was named VP

Watergate Scandal: Background: • The Break-In: 5 Nixon supporters broke into the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel complex to steal files – they got caught • The Cover-Up: members of Nixon’s staff began to try to hide any involvement by the President’s office – which was illegal. People began to question the President’s involvement • US vs. Nixon, 1974: special prosecutors ordered Nixon to turn over tape recordings of his office conversations - he refused citing “executive privilege” - Supreme Court ruled the President was not above the law • Impeachment Process: evidence from the tapes proved Nixon tried to stop the investigation. The House of Representatives was on the verge of impeaching Nixon • Nixon’s Resignation: instead of waiting to be impeached, Nixon resigned the Presidency - Vice President Gerald Ford became President
