  1. POCPA3 – DESY, May 21-23, 2012 POCPA3 - Introduction Power Converters for Particle Accelerators Roberto Visintini Elettra – Sincrotrone Trieste

  2. POCPA3 – some considerations • 48 Specialists (3 “internal”) • From 23 Facilities • From 12 Countries in 4 Continents • 46% (22 out of 48) 1st time participants POCPA3 – DESY, 21-23/05/2012

  3. Story and History of POCPA* 1st Question: why power converters' ones cannot? RF, Controls, Beam diagnostics,... Experts in other Particle Accelerators' Disciplines meet each other regularly since long ago… * From F. Bordry (CERN) and R. Visintini (Elettra) introductions to POCPA 2008 & 2010 POCPA3 – DESY, 21-23/05/2012

  4. Story and History of POCPA* (cont’d) 2nd Question: Where could we meet? • IPAC, PAC, EPE, PCIM, IEEE conferences (PESC, IAS, APEC...) • Achievements or positive results are presented • EP2 Forum (including Fusion & Academia) • CERN Schools (CAS) • Either not specialized or quite expansive in fee • Almost ONLY positive results or achievements, real World is not such! • Only two editions ('95 & '98) • Two CAS courses ('89 & '04), next one in 2014 In addition: • Limited number of specialists in the specific field (besides CAS) • Companies involved, no real “free speech” • Too long time interval (CAS) • Costs * From F. Bordry (CERN) and R. Visintini (Elettra) introductions to POCPA 2008 & 2010 POCPA3 – DESY, 21-23/05/2012

  5. Story and History of POCPA(end) The Answer: a specific workshops (every 2 years) The basic “Rules” • Invitationonly, not publicized and informal“Community”. • Experience exchange  Best Practices, knowledge and TROUBLES. • Accelerators Worldonly  nobody from the "Fusion World" nor Academia. • Free speech no companies invited nor sponsorship from commercial entities searched. • No fee host lab offers the breaks and the workshop dinner. POCPA3 – DESY, 21-23/05/2012

  6. …and here we are! • POCPA 2008 (Elettra) on “Reliability”: 25 specialists (3 “internal”) • POCPA 2010 (CERN) “Safety”: 52 specialists (19 “internal”) POCPA3 - DESY • Main Topic: Digital Regulation and Control • Presentation from Labs • Open Discussion and proposals for next POCPAin 2014 Vielen Dank für ihre Gastfreundschaft! POCPA3 – DESY, 21-23/05/2012
