Copy these definitions in your notebook- vocabulary #2 • Genre-category in which a work of literature is classified • Non-Fiction-tells about real people and events • Poetry-words are carefully chosen and arranged to create certain effects • Drama-performed by actors in front of an audience • Media-communication that reaches many people • Characterization-the way a writer creates and develops characters • Text Structure-the way a story is put together (its sequence) • Text Features-parts or elements of a piece of literature • Exposition-the first stage of a story plot that introduces the setting, characters and may introduce the conflict

This project will focus on non-fiction and informational text. • Step 1 – Read 5 different articles (honors 7): • 1- Editorial • 1- World News • 1- Local News • 1- Sports • 1- Entertainment • 2- Magazine articles of your choice • Step 2– Write a 7-8 sentence summary of each article (7 total summaries). • You may use the following questions to guide your summaries: • üBased on the selection, what is the author’s attitude toward the topic? What bias, if any, is shown? • üWhich statement(s) from the selection support(s) the headline? • üWhich detail best supports the central idea? • üWhat are some examples of descriptive language? How does this impact the article? • üWhat is the best line/quote from the article? Give evidence to support your answer. • ü Which sentence best summarizes the selection? • BE SURE TO ATTACH AND LABEL THE ARTICLES!!! • Step 3 – Write a one page article about something you did or experienced over your summer break (typed in 12 point font). This should include: Who/What/When/Why/and How and written in third person point of view (he, she, they, etc). You must include an illustration (drawn or computer generated) that connects to your essay. Step 4 – Turn all work in to your language arts teacher no later than Monday September 16th. The maximum score for any project turned in later than the due date is 85%. • ALL WORK SHOULD BE IN A FOLDER LABELED WITH YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME, as well as your Language Arts teacher’s name.
