Solution • A solution is where one substance (solute) is dissolved in another substance (solvent). • May be a solid dissolved in a liquid, a liquid dissolved in a liquid, or a gas dissolved in a gas • The goal of any solution is to get to equilibrium – where the solute is dissolved evenly in the solvent.

  3. Diffusion • The movement of molecules in an effort to get to equilibrium. • Requires no extra energy. • Examples: • Food Coloring in Water • Sugar in Iced Tea • Air freshener in the air • How diffusion works.

  4. Cell Membrane • Controls what can move into or out of a cell. • This is determined by size. • Big molecules cannot get through the cell membrane, but smaller ones can. Starch, proteins, nucleic acids cannot Some glucose, water, small ions like I+ can go through
