  4. About Me • Born in Iowa • Moved to Illinois in 1985 • Attended Aurora schools • Graduated from Aurora University in 2004 – Bachelors in Elementary • Masters Degree from U of I in 2009 – Teacher Leadership

  5. About Me • Married in 2004 • Two girls – Leah (2), Brynn (8 months) • Two dogs – Ben (German Shepherd), Joey (chocolate lab) • Reading, embarrassing reality TV addiction, food!

  10. Clip Chart • Daily behavior • Clip up or clip down as needed • Earn new clothespins for reaching the top – look for a label in their take home binder! • Consequence for reaching the bottom. • List color in OK Binder

  11. Reading • Nightly reading – no log! Riveting Reads instead. • Balanced literacy (guided, shared and independent reading, read aloud) • Reader’s Notebook (quarterly goals, genres, reader responses) • Model!

  12. Writing • Paragraphs and Essays • Research writing • Writing process • ‘Six Traits’ • ‘Best’ writing expectations • Handwriting

  13. Word Study • Pilot program – Spelling Connections • Analogies, parts of speech, cloze activities, word meaning • Weekly pretest and posttest • List comes home on Mondays • Weekly homework packet (3-4 pages) • Challenge list, shortened list based on pretest • Additional 5 review words

  14. Math • Addition, subtraction, and multiplication, facts should be mastered by the end of the year. • My Math • Nightly homework • Remember – this is all a spiral • Flexible grouping – every unit

  15. Rocket Math • Rocket Math will start with subtraction. • Each student has individualized goal and level. • End of Semester Expectations: • 1stSemester: Complete all subtraction levels • 2ndSemester: Complete all multiplication levels

  16. Science • Human Body (bones and muscles) • Water • Magnets and Electricity • Solar System • Health (nutrition and safety) Social Studies • What is a community? • Pioneers, immigrants, and others • Growing and changing communities • Map skills, continents

  17. Flexible Grouping • Groups can be formed in any of the content areas and are based on ability. • Groups are determined through some form of assessment. • Groups are fluid, therefore members of the groups frequently change. • Math, Guided Reading

  18. Grades and Report Cards Elementary report card is in checklist format of skills. B= Beginning D= Developing. P= Progressing S= Secure Daily work will be corrected but there will not be a letter grade assigned.

  19. Homework • Your child will receive homework almost every night. • Homework is… • Math worksheet • Nightly Reading • Any unfinished classwork • Spelling packet (due Friday)

  20. Homework • Homework will be recorded in an assignment notebook that we will write in daily. • All homework is expected to be turned in the next day unless otherwise noted. • Missing HW = loss of lunch with classmates (Ketchup Lunch)

  21. Konnect • Please check at least once a week. • Homework assignments • PTO info • Messages from the office • Reminders and requests • Clubs and after school activities

  22. FAQ’s Q: Can parents still come in to help out? A: Yes! I have lots of things you can help with. Feel free to sign up tonight on the poster in the hallway. We also have started a new Watch D.O.G.S. program.

  23. FAQ’s Q: Will my child be eating a snack during the day? A: Yes! I couldn’t survive without it. They are allowed to eat a healthy snack at any time during our Dailies. This privilege can be taken away if they are not cleaning up after themselves. Please make sure all snacks are nut free!

  24. FAQ’s Q: How can I find this information after tonight? A: This power point will be posted on our class Konnect page, along with a copy of our daily schedule.

Time for Supply Drop Off • Label everything necessary • Paper towels, baggies, Kleenex, etc. in the boxes at the front of the room. • Art shirt and PE shoes in pull out bin (find their number) • Supply box: • 2 sharp pencils • Crayons • Glue stick • Scissors (see me if you need some) • Pink eraser • All other supplies in pull out bins, please!.
