  1. How Do You Know If You Have A Rat In The House? When dealing with an infestation, one of the most feared and common pests is a rodent. For most people, there is nothing more unsettling than the thought they may have a rat in the house. Even the notoriously bad-tempered hotelier Basil Fawlty, brilliantly played by John Cleese, had a problem with a rat in a classic episode of the sitcom `Fawlty Towers`. However, it can be no laughing matter and if you think you have a rodent running loose in your home or workplace then you should check for the signs. If you suspect you have a rat infestation keep an eye and an ear out for the clues. Rodents are largely elusive, nocturnal creatures, rarely caught in the act. They can be hard to spot, and you will mostly only find the evidence of their activities the next morning. You should listen out for sounds of scratching at night. Black rats are often referred to as roof rats and with little wonder. They are excellent climbers and can turn up in the strangest places, the loft and the attic. You can hear rodents scurrying around and can spot their footsteps in the dust. It is also possible to recognise brown rats through the grinding of their teeth. If you are looking for rats you should also keep an eye out for rub marks, where dirt and grease on their bodies leave smudges behind. Another sure-fire indicatior is the presence of a nest or a rat hole. Brown rats are known for their skills as diggers and are experts at burrowing holes. They are ideal for finding shelter, storing food and building a nest. A rat nest is fashioned from various materials like paper, cardboard and often loft insulation, as well as other items, which can help a rat can set up residence.
