Overall 15 months of “existence” - governance and management functioning talks and first pubs appearing - seehttp://www.lancs.ac.uk/cockcroft-institute/ research programme developing from initial projects - identity building internationally - new projects beginning - collaborators/visitors “happening” seamless, essential, interface with ASTeC in place  education and outreach building - 2004/5 “tutorial dominated” (thanx ASTeC) - 2005/6 3+ courses, 18 “students” new staff working/arriving

Mission and Means  “strategy” – more from Richard Carter – developed by the Management Committee – endorsed by the CI Board – not yet understood by PPARC ! – too complicated for CCLRC ! – just right! means – core funding PPARC CCLRC NWDA univs – project funding: grants RCs industry overseas – infrastructure (“overheads”) discussions advancing

Mission and Means • The Institute’s “mission” is summarised in the following “deliverables”: • generic R&D in Accelerator Science and Technology (AST); • project specific R&D in AST • (e.g. a linear collider and a Neutrino Factory); • leadership and management of national deliverables to • international facilities (which may be UK-situated); • competence in crucial and specific technologies; • technology transfer to industry; • staff complement of internationally acknowledged expertise; • seamless involvement of the HEI and CCLRC sectors; • education and training to ensure a flourishing staff • supply side.

Management and Governance Board functioning (every 3 months) – decision approving – papers on web – talks on web – some science Management Committee functioning (every 2 weeks) – decision making – your parliament; press your rep! Advisory Committees (every 6 months) – yet to meet – business and scientific

  10. 4. Staff as proposed – Director + 3×4 senior (univs) + 2 CCLRC 5 now appointed – 12 research appointments underway – new project staff (~ another 12) preparing (incl. and beyond PPARC/CCLRC) anticipated – new institutions discussions with four univs advancing other RDAs?

Building fit-out “on schedule” (info Jan 11th 2005) – completion/hand-over April 10th 2006 occupation thereafter – organisation team in place  peaceful occupation please ! – building operation funding agreed and in place major opening/launch event (final corporate image!) – organisation teamin place (“Pavilion”?)

  14. Pioneers in a great new adventure ! We are beginning to understand who and what we are, and what we deliver ! Some immediate issues so that we get even better even faster.

  15. Organisation ? please ensure that overheads go to web DB weekly meeting ? When ? colloquia – Ed and Training proposal NM et al. seminars (ASTeC) ? NM et al. preprints – any papers please get DB to post as Cockcroft preprint with numbers – VERY important ? abstracts for conferences – next EPAC ? use the web (liaise with DB aware of relaunch) - password to all CI/ASTeC staff for as much as possible - update CI/ASTeC staff membership start to plan for move – coordinate with team!
