Formation of the Atmosphere • 5 billion years ago – no atmosphere • Volcanic eruptions released gases & UV radiation levels v. high – no life forms. • Early atmosphere 5-4.5 billion yrs BP • Water vapour 80% • Carbon dioxide 12% • Sulphur dioxide 7% • Nitrogen 1% & other trace gases • UV radiation reduced and early organisms used CO2 and released O2 – atmosphere slowly developed that could support plant and animal life. 17 November 2014
