  2. Physical Properties • Can be observed or measured without changing the object’s composition. • Used to describe matter

  3. Main Physical Properties of Metals • Medium to high luster (shiny) • Solid at room temperature (except Mercury Hg) • Malleable – can be bent or hammered into sheets • Ductile – can be drawn into wire • Good conductors of heat and electricity • Can be attracted to a magnet

  4. Main Nonmetal Physical Properties • None to very low luster • Exist as solid, liquid or a gas • NOT malleable, or ductile • Brittle (breaks into pieces easily) • Poor conductors of heat and electricity • Not attracted to a magnet

  5. Main Physical Properties of Metalloids • Generally solids • Can have high or low luster (shiny or dull) • May or may not be ductile or malleable • Conducts heat and electricity better than nonmetals, but not as well as metals • Not attracted to a magnet • Makes a good semiconductor
