  2. What Are The Goals? • To reduce/eliminate incidents of harassment, intimidation and bullying • To develop a school climate where respect and tolerance of differences is the norm. To have a student body that steps in to say: * “not here” * “we do not treat one another like that”

Definition of HIB Any gesture, any written, verbal or physical act, or any electronic communication, whether it be a single incidentor a series of incidents, that is reasonably perceived as being motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic, such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or a mental , physical or sensory disability, or by any other distinguishing characteristic, that takes place on school grounds, at any school sponsored function or on a school bus, or off school grounds, in accordance with law, that substantially disrupts or interferes with the orderly operation of the school or the rights of other students, and that:

Definition Continued • A reasonable person should know, under the circumstances, will have the effect of physically or emotionally harming a student or damaging the student’s property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm to his/her person or damage to his/her property; or • Had the effect of insulting or demeaning any student or group of students; or • Creates a hostile educational environment for the student by interfering with the student’s education or by severely or pervasively causing physical or emotional harm to the student.

  14. Efforts to Educate • Grade 9- 4 days of End The Cycle curriculum including a viewing of the film Sticks & Stones. Seniors are then trained to facilitate role plays and discuss/review tools to use as the bystander. • Grade 10- Assembly program • Grade 11- 4 days of Find The Courage curriculum targeting the skills of the bystander • Grade 12- Toolkit

  15. Challenges • If everything is bullying, nothing is bullying; must be able to distinguish HIB from Non-HIB • Part of growing up involves the dynamic of a social pecking order • The “not my child” syndrome • To the parent of the bully the punishment is too severe; to the parent of the victim the punishment is too light • If adults intervene too often and too early, will this generation develop ability to handle social conflict independently • Must work together to hold students accountable to their actions
