Extend the shelf life: Modified Atmosphere Packaging - MAP could be defined as "the enclosure of food products in gas-barrier materials, in which the gaseous environment has been changed in order to inhibit spoilage agents and therefore either maintain a higher quality of perishable food during its natural life or actually extend the shelf life" (Young et al.)

Extend the shelf life: Controlled Atmosphere Packaging - CAP, an intentional modification of the internal gaseous environment and maintenance of that atmosphere at a specified condition throughout the cycle, regardless of the temperature or other environmental variations. So once the atmospheric composition within the package is decided, packager must find ways to control and maintain that composition throughout the storage process. CAP has been used since 1930s for the storage of fruit in large storage chambers in which both oxygen and carbon dioxide levels were controlled (Blakistone, 1998).

  38. Extended shelf life: Micro-perforatedfilms are characteristic of perforation on the films ranging in diameter from 40 to 200 microns. The perforations are made by using mechanical, spark or laser methods (Ghosh, 1998). It has been found that micro-perforated film is very promising in extending the shelf life of respiring produce (Yantasari, 1994, Geeson, 1988).

BRC/IoP Packaging Standard • Background of the standard: The British Retail Consortium (BRC), together with the Institute of Packaging (IoP) have developed a standard for the producers of packaging materials which was introduced in 2001. BRC/IoP is the only third party auditing standard for the packaging industry that has been written by the retailers.

BRC/IoP Packaging Standard • This standard is voluntary and sets out hygiene and quality requirements for companies manufacturing packaging for supply to the food industry. • The standard also sets out rules and regulations for compliance to the standard. • The current trend in the EEC is a move from voluntary adherence to the standards, to enacting a mandatory standard.
