WORSHIP I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • WORSHIP is everything we do in response to God’s wonderful gift. • It is: • Our beliefs, values, and behaviour • Our praise, prayer and Bible study • Our decisions about life-style choices: • friends, school, church, home, hobbies, • sports, entertainment, and more

  3. WORSHIP I Love Jesus Reaches up to God “Give yourselves completely to God since you have been given new life. And use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God.” Romans 6:13

WORSHIP I Love Jesus Reaches up to God The children were shouting in the temple area, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they (priests) were indignant. “Do you hear what the children are saying?” they asked Him (Jesus) “Yes” Jesus said, “have you never read, “From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise?” Matthew 21:14-16

  5. WORSHIP I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Children worship using all the learning styles. • Visual - see it • Auditory - hear it • Tactile - touch it • Kinaesthetic - do it

  6. WORSHIP I Love Jesus Reaches up to God Children have certain abilities and attitudes which lie at the heart of worship. They are aware of their environment and the community around them. They are capable of intense identification and imaginative hearing. They are infectiously enthusiastic. They can be sacrificially generous and honest in their responses. They respond physically and emotionally to what they see and hear. ... Children bring to worship a directness and simplicity of faith. They are spontaneous. They are receptive and have hope. They know how to show thankfulness and joy; [Ng & Thomas 1981: 16, 23].

  8. WORSHIP I Love Jesus Reaches up to God They learn to worship by worshipping - experiencing and participating. Nurture the sense of wonder and awe. “I wonder what God looks like?” “I wonder why God made that bird like that?” “Wow, look what God has done.”

  10. MUSIC I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • “Sing to the Lord a new song . . . “ Psalm 149:1 • Use music to lift children up to God. • Have background music playing as children arrive. • Have it as a backdrop to activities. • Use music to teach memory verses.

  11. MUSIC I Love Jesus Reaches up to God “There are few means more effective for fixing His (Christ’s) words in the memory than repeating them in song . . It is one of the most effective means of impressing the heart with spiritual truth.” Education, pp.167,168

MUSIC I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Choose songs to support Gracelink themes of Grace, Worship, Community and Service. • Children are multisensory learners. • Allow them to move their arms, jump or clap. • Increase understanding by having pictures to see and objects to hold that relate to the song. • Encourage older children to write their own songs and write tunes for scripture.

PRAYER I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Teach them about God’s place in their lives and the purpose of prayer. • God hear us when we pray. • God wants to be our friend. • God wants us to talk to Him every day about everything we’re thinking about and need. • Prayer is great and really important. • God wants us to pray for others.

  16. PRAYER I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Stages • Beginner • Prayer is associated with love and closeness. Start using one word prayers or repeating prayers. Later sentence prayers. Learn to fold their hands and later their eyes. • Kindergarten • Have faith God will answer prayer. Pray about everything. Self-centred prayers. Start to pray for specific things and others. • Junior • Prayer is a private conversation with God. Heard by God and comes from feelings and needs. • Earliteen • Prayer changes the prayer. PRAYER I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Praying aloud • KISS – keep it simple and sincere • ACTS – adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication • M& M prayers – red (Jesus), blue (sick) green (food). • Prayer bags/prayer cubes • Build a personal faith story by keeping a prayer journal – a prayer corner

PRAYER I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Creative Ideas • Adapt party games – balloon prayers, treasure hunt prayers, pass the parcel • Make display items with prayers written on them • Prayer paper chains, pictures, prayer spinners • Object lesson prayers – stones in the sea • Prayer e-mails • Fingertip Prayers

  22. PRAYER I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Numbers 6:24-26 • The Lord bless you and keep you • The Lord make His face shine upon you • And be gracious to you • The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. • Pray for children • Help children to prayer for each other

GIVING I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Give children opportunities to give to Jesus. • Present the needs of the missions and encourage generosity. • Be creative with displays and offering containers. • All I have I give You, • though my gifts are small. • Money, time and talents, • Jesus, have them all!

GIVING I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Teach the value of tithing. • TITHE is returned to God in recognition that He owns and supplies everything • (Psalm 24:1; Leviticus 27:30). • Tithe is 10% of our increase and is returned through His storehouse (the church) to support ministry locally, nationally and internationally . • (Malachi 3:8-12; 1 Corinthians 9:13, 14).

Children need to slow down and have time for reflection.” They need role models to show them how to do this.” Ivy Beckworth. Formational Children’s Ministry They need quiet places and quiet times in the Sabbath School where they can pray and reflect.

  26. MEDITATIVE I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • In debriefing activities sometimes send children off to quiet corners where they can think through reflective questions. Children can bought back together to share. • Sometimes require them to pray alone. • Set an atmosphere for quiet and reflection by dimming the lighting and having candles. • Get children to quietly think about scripture passage. • Distribute flowers and ask for quiet reflection on God’s wonderful creation

PERSONAL I Love Jesus Reaches up to God • Give young children a few minutes of quiet time looking at Bible picture books, while Mum or Dad read their Bible. • Kindergarten children can have their own special “God Time” in a quiet place. Have a “Toolkit for them of supplies. • Take children out into nature to listen to birds, see animals and smell the flowers. • Older children. Add age –appropriate CD’s and books to the Toolkit.
