3. Grace Hopper Biography Cont. Tam Nguyen - Section 101 1951 invented the compiler, the cornerstone of all high end programming languages.
1951-1957 Hopper and her staff created the first commercial high end mathematical and business computer languages, MATH-MATIC and FLOW-MATIC.
1953 named directorof automatic programming for the first commercial computer, UNIVAC.
1959 organized the conference that created the business language COBOL.
1967 returned to active service in the US Navy after seven month retirement.

5. First computer bug Tam Nguyen - Section 101
Refers to a moth stuck between the relays on the Mark II.
The operators removed the moth and affixed it to the log. (See the picture above.) The entry reads: "First actual case of bug being found.
The word went out that they had "debugged" the machine and the term "debugging a computer program" was born.
Hopper was the first person to 'debug' a computer.

Pursuing her belief that computer programs could be written in English.
Invented B-O compiler, later known as FLOW-MATIC.
Using B-O, she developed COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language).
Under her direction, the Navy developed a set of programs and procedures for validating COBOL compilers.
