Original Design Requirements Sean Doherty Frank Novak Mike Salvaterra • Design a device that will • Utilize mechanical or electrical methods to open jars, or a combination of both. • Break the vacuum seal of jars with right-handed threaded lids. • Be compatible with jars of variable lid diameter and jar height. • Be designed within a minimized budget.

Original Design Requirements Sean Doherty Frank Novak Mike Salvaterra • Design a device that will • Open many jars of different sizes consecutively and without failure. • Be designed for intuitive use, possibly utilizing visual cues. • Not pose any safety hazard, however small, with normal use (sharp edges, pinch points, etc.) • Be durable.

  10. Redesign Requirements • Reduce the area of the footprint by 40% or more. • Reduce the weight of the device by 50% or more. • Improve the aesthetics of the design. • Produce a prototype with a cost of $300 or less.

  11. Redesign Considerations • Range of jar sizes • Elimination of cantilever support • Reuse of slotted plate and gripper design • Recycle parts, wherever possible to reduce cost
