  1. Inleiding Gyves is 16 en woont in Oost-Congo, in de provincie Zuid-Kivu. Hij hakt wolframiet in een mijn. Hij en zijn vrienden hebben de mijn gehuurd van de landeigenaar. Ze werken zeven dagen in de week, van zes uur ’s ochtends tot zes uur ’s avonds. Zonder touw dalen ze af met houweel en zaklamp om urenlang wolframiet te hakken. Gevaarlijk en vies werk. Gyves wil later graag voor zichzelf wat beginnen, buiten de mijn, dat is zijn grote droom. Zoals boer worden, winkelier of vrachtwagenchauffeur. “Maar wat heeft het voor zin daaraan te denken”, zegt hij. “Het wordt toch nooit wat”.
