  2. Agenda • Challenges facing 10th graders and their parents • Tests and transcripts • Upcoming Activities • Course Selection for 2014/2015

  3. “Sophomoric” is only a word! • Higher expectations from teachers • Increased expectation to “think for themselves” • Increased self-responsibility • Serious preparation for college begins • Heightened tension due to standardized tests, tougher classes, new social opportunities • Taking steps toward figuring out who they are and what path they should take

  4. 10th Grade Standardized Tests The PLAN • Practice test for the ACT; normed for sophomores • Provides information to assist in career/college planning. • Viz sophomores took the test in October • Provides a projected range of ACT scores • Four sub-tests: English, Math, Reading, and Science and Reasoning • Knowledge-based • Scoring: 32 points maximum per section.

  5. The PSAT • Practice test for the SAT • Junior test scores determine National Merit qualifications. • Taken in October of Sophomore and Junior year; • Assesses Critical Reading, Math, and Writing Skills • Reasoning-based • Scoring: 1-240: 80 points maximum per section

ACT and SAT • Both tests are universally accepted by colleges - www.fairtest.org – list of test optional institutions • General Recommendation: Take ACT & SAT no earlier than December of Junior Year. Review and re-test in the one that yields a better result. • PLAN and PSAT scores helpful in predicting: • Test of choice • Areas of strength to capitalize upon • Areas of weakness to focus on

  8. Enrichment Opportunities • Summer programs/camps, job shadowing, College programs for high school students! Summer Opportunities Fair on Saturday, Feb. 1, 10 am to 3 pm at Mary Institute-Country Day • National College Fair typically at Maryville University the last Sunday in April. • Websites of opportunities:- Naviance-Enrichment Programs under “colleges section”- Books & college specific websites.

  9. What to expect next year… • More detailed information about the college process • Students will take College Admissions Tests (SAT/ACT) • Junior Parent event on College Process in September • Continue to balance academics and activities.

  10. Registration Process • Late January/February • Program of Studies available through Vizonline and Naviance • Counselors explain process to sophomores in small groups • Teachers explain their departments’ course offerings to students in class • Advanced Course Consideration Request available on Naviance ; complete by Jan. 24 • Departments consider advanced course requests and provide feedback to counselors • March • Individual student meetings with counselors • Check credits • Discuss course choices which move toward graduation and post-high school plans • Assess rigor and balance of schedule as is appropriate to each individual • Counselor registers student’s course selections, prints copy for parental approval • Student returns signed copy to counselor

Graduation Requirements 28 CREDITS REQUIRED AND MUST INCLUDE: • Computer Education .5 credit • English 4.0 credits • Fine and Performing Arts 1.5 credits • Foreign Languages* 2.0 credits (or 3 levels) • Mathematics** 4.0 credits • Physical Education*** 1.0 credits • Health .5 credit • Science 3.0 credits • Social Studies 3.0 credits • Theology 4.0 credits * Students must complete 3 levels of a Foreign Language **Students who complete Calculus 1 during Junior year may fulfill math graduation requirements ***.5 PE credit can be obtained via sports participation junior or senior year

College Credit Courses OPTION I. - Advanced Placement (AP) • College credit determined by AP exam score in May. • AP test scores of 4 or 5 (sometimes 3) earn college credit at most competitive colleges. Highly selective colleges may not award credit. • Departmental recommendation(s) required for enrollment • Visitation offers Advanced Placement courses in: • Calculus (AB/BC) ●Physics • Statistics ●Chemistry • US History ●English Literature • European History ● French • Biology ●Spanish • Computer Science (Java) www.collegeboard.com– find college, click on SAT/AP information box, and scroll to link to college website to quickly reference AP credit policy.

College Credit CoursesOPTION II. - Dual Enrollment College Credit (CC) through SLU • Receive both high school credit and college credit for the same class from SLU. • Listed on Visitation transcript as “CC” class; student must register with SLU and pay course tuition to receive college credit. • Only some colleges accept a dual credit course for college credit. • Visitation offers College Credit in English, Calculus, History, Science, French, Spanish & Psychology. • SLU 1818 transferability report:http://www.slu.edu/x15952.xml

Registration/Course Selection • Rising juniors will automatically be scheduled Theology 11 • REQUIRED ELECTIVES: Students must choose one course from each department. • English • American Literature • English Honors 11 (DA) • CC American Literature (DA) • Social Studies • U.S. History, 1787 to Present • AP US History (DA) • Mathematics: Science (junior or senior year): • Discrete Math Anatomy/Physiology • Pre-Calculus Physics • CC Calculus I (DA) Advanced Physics (DA) • AP Calculus AB (DA) AP Physics (DA) AP Biology (DA) • Physical Education: Genetics (.5) • Dance Environmental Science (.5) • Physical Education Intro to Engineering/Robotics • Sport participation

  15. Selecting Electives • Check progress in meeting graduation requirements • Students will choose alternates for electives • Review and finalize with counselor during individual meetings
