  1. GROUP POLICIES AND SECURITY USING WINDOWS SERVER 2008 Raymond Ross EKU, Dept. of Technology, CEN

  2. OUTLINE • Discuss Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 and how to set up GPO/security software. • Show screenshots of setting up Server 2008 and security software. • Show video of working server with GPO’S and security software.

  3. MOTIVATION • While working at Kuhlman Electric, the company has been having a major issue with factory workers always getting on the internet and playing games on the computer. • Want to make a proposal to show them by switching to Windows Server they can easily set up policies and security for the network.

  4. INTRODUCTION • Using Server 2008 to apply group policies in conjunction with Active Directory. • Most of my research came from http://technet.microsoft.com.

  5. PROBLEM STATEMENT • Create a server using group policies to apply to 2 workstations with two different users. • Apply security roles and security software to the network

  6. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Install Windows Server 2008 on a desktop. • Add and configure roles: Active Directory, DHCP server, DNS server. • Add and configure Group Policy management feature. • Set security roles to users. • Add security software • Create two users on two different workstations to test GP’s.

  7. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Install Server 2008

  8. PROPOSED SOLUTION

  9. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Install and configure Active Directory, DHCP server and DNS server.

  10. PROPOSED SOLUTION

  11. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Install Group Policy Management

  12. PROPOSED SOLUTION

  13. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Security Settings for the user and workstation.

  14. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Applied group policies and security settings to users computer using Group policy Update Utility. • GPUdate.exe • GPUpdate[/Target:{Computer | User}] [/Force]

  15. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Microsoft Baseline Analyzer 2.0

  16. PROPOSED SOLUTION

  17. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0

  18. RESULTS • After some DNS trouble was resolved, GP’s worked as planed when applied to users and workstations • Security software also worked as planned. Still have to update security settings to users workstations according to the Baseline analysis.

  19. CONCLUSIONS • Using Windows Server 2008 as well as Server 2003 can really control a business environment. • I found server 2008 to be user friendly and fairly easy to use and understand. • Completing the project really increased my morale.

  20. FUTURE WORK • Being able to access and configure the server remotely. • Investigate why DNS server was not recognized at first, then magically started working. • Being able to manipulate this project in a actual business environment. • Can send me suggestions or questions at rayiii3@live.com.
