  2. Students applying to K.O. Knudson for Sixth Grade select a Major Area of Study from the following areas: Major Areas of Study • Band • Dance • Drama • Orchestra • Technology: Computer Graphic Design • TV Production • Visual Art • Vocal

  3. Applications • Applications are accepted from October – February according to the dates set by the Select Schools office. • All applications received after the deadline are considered late and are not reviewed until all qualified applications received on time are exhausted. • Received over 2100 applications for 2010-11 and several hundred late applications.

  4. Applications • Applications, both paper and on-line, must include a copy of the student’s 1st Trimester/Semester report card to be complete. • Incomplete Applications can not be scored. • ALL MATERIAL MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE APPLICATION DEADLINE – 5:00 PM ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2011.

  5. Applications • Two scoring criteria; • Rigorous – Cashman, Hyde Park, & Roy Martin (Includes Standardized Test Scores in Math, Reading, Science, & Writing) • Standard – Knudson, Bridger, & Gibson • Standard Criteria evaluates three areas: • Grades = 4 points possible • Attendance = 3 points possible • Citizenship = 3 points possible Total = 10 points possible

  6. Grades GPA of: 3.5 – 4.0 = 4 points 3.0 – 3.49 = 3 points 2.5 – 2.99 = 2 points 2.0 – 2.49 = 1 point Below 2.0 = 0 points Subjects included in GPA are: Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science (PE, Art, Music, Library, etc. are not included)

  7. Attendance: 1st Trimester Report Card • 0-2 Absences = 3 pts • 3-5 Absences = 2 pts • 6-7 Absences = 1 pt • 8 or above absences = 0 1st Semester Report Card • 0-3 Absences = 3 pts • 4-7Absences = 2 pts • 8-9 Absences = 1 pt • 10 or above absences = 0

  8. Citizenship • 51% E’s (No N’s or U’s) = 3 points • 51% S’s (No N’s or U’s) = 2 points • E & S grades with One U or N = 1 point • 2 or more U’s = 0 points

  9. Qualifying Scores • All applications are scored and a Qualifying score for each Major Area of Study is established based upon the applications received for the major. • Qualifying scores for 2010-11 ranged from 6-8 points. • All qualified applications are placed in the lottery.

  10. Examples: Susan Green GPA – 3.0 = 3 pts Att. – 4 abs = 2 pts Cit. – 3 E’s & 5 S’s = 2 pts Total = 7 pts Joseph Black GPA – 3.50 = 4 pts Att. – 3 abs = 3 pts Cit. – 5 E’s & 3 S’s = 3 pts Total = 10 pts

  11. Examples: Kevin White GPA – 2.75 = 2 pts Att. – 10 abs = 0 pts Cit. – 3 E’s & 5 S’s = 2 pts Total = 4 pts Martha Grey GPA – 3.0 = 3 pts Att. – 5 abs = 2 pts Cit. – 4 E’s, 3 S’s & 1 N = 1 pt Total = 6 pts

  12. Feeder Preference • Students from Gilbert and Mackey are given a feeder preference in the lottery. • 25% of the seats available are reserved for the feeder preference. Example: 60 seats for Drama = 15 seats for students from these 2 schools. If there are more than 15 applications from these 2 schools, they are drawn in a lottery, those not selected are placed in the general lottery.

  13. Other Preferences • Geographic Preference • Students who live in geographic zone • Sibling Preference • Students who are siblings of current 6th & 7th graders

  14. Why Set Academic Criteria? • Transition to middle school is difficult enough. • Demands of the longer school day, the many extra-curricular activities students are involved in, and the long transportation time add to the burden on students. • We want students to be successful.

  15. Important Dates • October 23, 2010: Magnet Fair @ Galleria Mall 10am-5pm • January 22, 2011: Magnet Fair@ Meadows Mall 10am-5pm • November 1st, 2010: Online Applications Available! • KO Knudson on-site recruiting events: January TBA • APPLICATIONS DUE: FEBRUARY 7TH, 2010 @ 5PM.
