  3. Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport In a nutshell……. Effective teachers make all students feel safe and valued. This is creating an environment both verbally and nonverbally. When students are treated with dignity they feel safe in taking intellectual risks. Domain 2

  4. Establishing a Culture for Learning In a nutshell……. A culture for learning implies high expectations for all students. The teacher and students take ownership for maintaining a positive culture for content learning. When a learning culture is absent in the classroom deep and meaningful content learning cannot take place. Staff and students demonstrate and promote both formal and informal core values. Domain 2

  5. Managing Classroom Procedures In a nutshell……. Teachers must develop smooth operational procedures and effective time management before they may address instructional techniques. Experienced teachers demonstrate skills in managing transitions before, during and after instructional time. Students assume responsibility for the care, location and distribution of materials. Domain 2

  6. Managing Student Behavior In a nutshell……. Learning cannot occur in an environment where student behavior is out of control. The standards of behavior are appropriate to the developmental levels of the students and are consistent with the cultural norms. Teachers encourage students to monitor their own behavior. A key to efficient and respectful management of student behavior lies in agreed-upon standards of conduct and clear consequences for overstepping the bounds. Domain 2

  7. Organizing Physical Space In a nutshell……. A physical environment concerns safety and accessibility to learning and accommodate efficient traffic flow. A second element involves the arrangement of furniture for optimal instructional needs. Manage physical resources (flip charts, whiteboards, videos, walls that teach). When a classroom is a true community of learners, students themselves become involved in the physical environment and take initiative in making it effective. Domain 2
