  1. Intermolecular forces Introduction

  2. Objectives By the end of this lesson, I should be able to: • compare simply between ionic and covalent bonding. • locate metals and nonmetals on the periodic table. • define intramolecular forces as ionic and covalent bonds. • define intermolecular forces.

  3. Key vocabulary • chemical bonding الرابطة الكيميائية • lattice شبكية • intermolecular forces القوة الناشئة بين الجزيئات • intramolecular forces قوي الترابط بين الذرات داخل الجزيء

  4. How are atoms joined together in compounds? Chemical bonding Covalent “Intramolecular forces” Ionic H2O Ionic bonding NaCl table salt Ionic Covalent bonding Covalent KI Ionic CO2 MgO Ionic HCl CaO Covalent

  5. How are atoms joined together in compounds? Chemical bonding What are the types of chemical bonding? “Intramolecular forces” Ionic bonding Covalent bonding Between metal and non metal atoms Between non metal atoms Giant Lattice Molecular Example Na Cl Example CO2 Solids Liquids and Gases

  6. What holds molecules together? • Intermolecular forces When one molecule approaches another there is a multitude of forces between the particles in the two molecules’ attraction between different charges and repulsion between similar charges.

  7. What holds molecules together? • Intermolecular forces It is the force of attraction between two molecules.

  8. Chemical bondingIntramolecular forces It is the bond formed between atoms inside a molecule.

  9. H.W 1- Name 3 metals and 3 nonmetals. 2- Mansion 2 differences between ionic and covalent bonding. 3- Locate sodium “Na” and sulphur “S” on the periodic table. # of group and period 4- Give an example of a covalent compound and an ionic compound. 5-What is the difference between chemical bonding and intermolecular forces?

  10. Home work • Advanced chemistry for you book, Page 55 Questions 1 “copy and complete” • Page 73 Questions 1 the first two paragraphs” copy and complete” in students’ copy book. Dead line Sunday October 18th2009
