  1. Local Challenge Project Mikey, Hannah, Gooch, Liz, JP

  2. Costa Rica Trip • On this trip we will be gathering data from places in Costa Rica and analyzing this data. Towards the end of the trip we will be collaborating with other students about our findings • In preparation for this project on Costa Rica, we are doing local challenge projects. • In this project we are recognizing local problems in our community and making an effort towards fixing these issues.

  3. Our Idea • While brainstorming for this project we realized that our school does take advantage of our compost program. • Although we do have a program set up for compost, the students do not use it. • Everyday, at lunch, kids through out very much food that could be composted • We realized with just a few changes, we could implement compost program in the lunch rooms and make a big difference.

  4. The Project • With this in mind, we decided to make a movement towards implementing composting and promoting it. • Seeing as we already have a compost program, we just don’t use it implementing will be easy. • The somewhat harder part is promoting it. It is hard to get hundreds of students to not only understand composting, but also consistently do it.

  5. Implantation • We already have a compost pile and full compost setup at school. We just need to get buckets for food and transport it to the outdoor pile. • Acquiring buckets for lunch time should be cheap and should get the implementation piece of our project.

  6. Promoting • The second half of our project is promoting compost so that it works. Not all kids know how to compost correctly. • This part of the project our group will create a video that will instruct students how to compost properly and efficiently. • It will also inform kids why they should compost, and what benefits it will bring to the community.

  7. Desired Outcome • Hopefully we will create an effective composting program that will eliminate food waste and allow create useful soil/dirt for a school garden. • We also hope to create a program that will last for years to come. If we can promote the program well enough, we will not have to be there to run it. • Lastly we hope to spread our idea to other schools and get more students on board with composting. If we can influence other schools we will make an even larger positive impact on the world.
