  2. Sit anywhere for now. • Please fill out the index card with the information outlined on the board. (You will also do this in English.)

  3. People Hunt • Fill out the left column with your answers. • When I say “go,” find someone else in the class that shares an answer with you and get him/her to sign your paper. Try to get only one signature per person.

  4. Why do we have House? • Strengthen our community • Provide a mode for student-directed learning and growth in our Essential Skills • Practice team building • Provide security • Provide a “home base” for students and their parents • Communication • Provide academic and personal support

  5. What will we do in House? • Project Support • Academic advising • Disseminate general information & announcements • Team building activities and other programs (i.e. diversity workshop) • House competitions and other events • Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) • Thought Cards • Reflections

  6. Academic Support • Every Thursday that we have House • Teachers must hold students accountable for having their planner at all times • Check student agendas/planners regularly • Check PowerTeacher with each student to see all course grades and attendance (one-on-one conferences) • Parent phone calls

  7. SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) • SSR will be on most days we have House (at the beginning of the period) • Students must carry a book or other type of approved reading with them at all times (non-fiction, fiction, essays, poetry, or news/political magazines--social magazines, advertisements, sports score tables do not count for SSR). • Students must fill in weekly reading logs to document and reflect on what they read • If student does not carry, book, commit to reading, or complete logs, House Teacher must contact parents for conference.

  8. Issues and Events • Every Friday that we have House • We will read an assigned article, answer questions and learn new vocabulary • Participation in class discussion is essential!

  9. House Wall Collage • I’ve reserved the entire left wall (with the agenda board) FOR YOU! • Please bring in any photos, postcards, stickers (but please stick them on a piece of paper first, not directly on the wall), awards, etc. that represent you. (2-3 items each.) Nothing should be bigger than an 8” by 11” paper. • We’ll share them next time we meet 

  10. Get into groups of 4. • Front two turn and face, back two stay in place. • Take out a piece of paper (one for your whole group.) Write down as many things as you remember. What happens during House?

  11. House Paperwork • Get them all signed and turned in ASAP!

  12. Remind 101 • Sign up using the number and code on the board behind you.

  13. Closure: Thought Cards • Please answer the following question on your thought card (you do not have to write the question): • What are 3 of my goals for 10th grade? List at least one academic goal and one personal goal.

  14. Homework • Get all paperwork signed and bring emergency kits! • Bring SSR book to next session (Friday!)
