  2. Alliteration • Alliteration is the repetition of initial sounds in a series of words. • Examples: • Ally the Alligator Ate Apples. • Danny’s delightful dance made me happy. • Katie Cat can kindly clap. • Can you think of any examples?

  3. Onomatopoeia • An onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like a noise. • Examples: • bang • moo • crash • splat • ring • Can you think of any examples?

  4. Idiom • An idiom is a saying that does not mean what it literally says. • Examples: • You are driving me up a wall! • It’s raining cats and dogs. • I have been running in circles all day! • It was a piece of cake. • Can you think of any examples?

  5. Simile • A simile compares two things using like or as. • Examples: • The orange leaves look like fire. • The snow looked like a white blanket. • The man was as happy as a kid in a candy store. • Why is “He likes to eat cake,” not a simile? • Can you think of any examples?

  6. Metaphor • A simile compares two things without using like or as. • Examples: • The orange leaves are little fires. • The snow is a white blanket. • The man was a kid in a candy store for a day. • Can you think of any examples?

  7. Personification • Personification gives human qualities to nonhuman things. • Examples: • The sunset painted the ocean orange. • The car’s engine coughed and sputtered when it started. • The lights blinked in the distance. • Can you think of any examples?

  8. Hyperbole • A hyperbole is an exaggeration. • Examples: • I nearly died laughing. • I am so hungry I could eat a horse. • I tried a thousand times before I got the right answer. • Can you think of any examples?

  9. Palindrome • A palindrome is a word that is spelled the same forwards and backwards. • Examples: • mom • racecar • eye • did • Can you think of any examples?

  10. Oxymoron • An oxymoron is a phrase that combines 2 words that are opposites. • Examples: • jumbo shrimp • same difference • That color is pretty ugly. • seriously funny • almost exactly • Can you think of any examples?
