Why do cats eyes glow in the dark? • Cats have an extra layer of cells on the back of their eyes that reflects the light more through the eye • The light that we see with our eyes is only the light that is reflected off an object • Reflection – occurs when light waves bounce off an object. The image you see in the mirror has been reflected twice (once from you, again off the mirror)

  3. Law of reflection – The angle of incidence (arrival) is equal to the angle of reflection (departure)

  4. 2 types of reflection • 1. Regular – follows the law of reflection • 2. Diffuse – light reflects at different angles • Ex. Why you don’t see your reflection on walls

  5. What is the difference between a light source and a reflection? • Light sources can be seen in the dark, reflections can not. • Ex. • Moon? • Light bulb? • Flashlight?

  6. Why do objects closer to lights appear brighter than those farther away? • As light travels, it scatters (goes in many directions) as it scatters it gets weaker or less bright • Whenever light is shown on an object, the light is absorbed • Whenever light is bent it is called scattered • Certain wavelengths are scattered more than others so the visible light colors are seen

  7. Why do objects appear different in water? • Results of refraction – bending of light waves as the wave passes between 2 substances in which the speed of the wave differs • How can this be useful? • Eyeglasses which use lenses in which light bends • Concave (thinner in the middle) • Convex (thicker in the middle)

  8. How are rainbows made? • White light from the sun is refracted (bent) through water droplets to produce the color spectrum • The amount they are refracted is dependent on their wavelengths
