  2. HISTORY • Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1493 and named it Antigua • after a church • Settled by pre-agricultural Amerindians • Antigua was always a farming island, the natives farmed corn, sweet potatoes, chiles, guava, tobacco and cotton

  3. ECONOMICS • More than half of Antigua's income comes from tourism • The currency is The • East Caribbean Dollar • Antigua is in a public debt of 359.8 million

  4. FESTIVALS • Antigua Independence Festival (became independent in 1981) • Antigua sailing week. Sailors from all over the world come to Antigua for this festival • Black History Month. BHM is big in Antigua. Most of the population is African American

  5. FOOD • Lots of fresh foods • The main protein is fish • Lots of good land to grow wheat and other crops

  6. FLORA AND FAUNA • Mongoose, hawksbill turtle, goats, horses, cows, green tree lizard, barracuda • Birds: laughing gull, west Indian whistling duck, yellow billed tropic bird, zenaida dove • Neem tree, lobolly tree, giant milkweed, date palm, dagger tree

  7. ACTIVITIES • Water: Sailing, snorkeling, diving, cruises, fishing, kayaking and swimming • Land: Cricket, hiking, golfing, biking, tennis, bird watching • Excursions: Eco tours, helicopters, zip line canopy tour, scenic tours, seafairs
