Playground Supervision • General Guidelines • Wear a yellow smock and take first aid fanny pack and a pager for contact with office • Students should use safe actions when playing with equipment • Supervisors should scan the playground regularly for child safety • Watch for strangers or vehicles on the perimeter, immediately report any suspicious activities to the office. • Bullying and fighting will not be tolerated • All playground toys should be put away at the end of recess • Be aware of safety during inclement weather • Puddles after rain • Icy areas in the winter • Snow ball throwing is dangerous and not permitted

  3. playground behavior • Consequences for students • First time -Verbal correction (remind student of the rule) Second time- student can sit on the bench for a 3 minute timeout or • Student can be asked to play at another activity • Fighting – take immediate action. Students should take a timeout in separate areas. Get student view points of what happened and report behavior to their teacher at the end of recess. • Encourage students that exhibit rough play to do activities with less physical contact such as tetherball or four square. • Address any bullying activity and report to teacher if there are reoccurrences with the same students Effective one liners • Show me the right way… • Make better choices next time • Please find something else to do

Playground injuries • Fanny packs are equipped with Band Aids and tissues , replace items as necessary • Minor bumps or scrapes can be taken care of on the play ground • Students injuries that require ice packs, wound cleaning, or medical treatment should be sent to the office • Students complaining of illness or vomiting should be sent to the office.

Rules for playground equipment • Monkey/ Climbing Bars • Keep shoes on • Feet should always face down • When a child is climbing other children should not walk under them • Students should always use both hands when climbing Sandbox • Use sand toys appropriately • Keep sand in the sand area • Keep sand on the ground • Shake and stomp off feet when leaving sand area • Keep shoes on

Rules for Playground equipment • Jungle Gym • Use stairs for walking up and down • Slide down the slide on your bottom facing forward • If you meet another student in the tube one student should back up • Climbing on top of equipment is not safe Swings • Keep bottom in seat • Students can push student in the swing from the back and should not run with the swing because they could fall and get hit by the child in the swing). • Swing only back and forth • Stay away from swing area when walking to avoid injury

  7. Cafeteria Guidelines • Encourage students to use inside voice. Supervisors should model quiet voices. • Watch for pushing/ shoving/ cutting in line • Inform students of meal choices in line so they can make choices quickly and keep the line moving. • Assist students who raise their hands for help with: opening containers/spills/questions • Students should not empty trays or move to other tables once seated. • Students should keep there hands to themselves. • Student should not talk with food in their mouth to prevent choking. • Student should walk to and from their tables • Push in chairs to prevent trips. • Students can be dismissed when they have finished eating and their area is clean • Spills are cleaned up • Napkins and containers are not left on the table or floor • Students should push chairs in when leaving to prevent trips

Cafeteria Corrective Behavior Strategies • Students are speaking loud or yelling • Use attention signal - Hold up two fingers. • Remind students of the rule • Walk over to student(s) and speak calmly. • If continues student can be moved to another table. • Student is laughing with mouth full • Remind student of the danger of choking. • If continues move to another table. • Student is touching other students or their tray. • Remind student of the rule, keep hands to self. • If this continues move student away from others.

Restroom Supervision • Use whisper voices or no talking • One push of soap • 3 pulls on the paper towel • If student is speaking loud or laughing remind them of the whisper voice rule. • Model whisper voice in restroom and hallways • If student breaks rules or is unsafe in the restroom they should be supervised outside of the stall or outside in the hallway (pending opposite genders) until behavior is improved. • Demonstrate hand washing for younger students • If student is using too much soap or paper towel demonstrate hand washing techniques again.

Hallway supervision • Supervising staff should stand in the middle of the hallway so they can see both ways and visible to students also encourages “be polite stay to the right” • Be in the hallway before students arrive • Model quiet indoor voice • Watch for horseplay, pushing, loud voices or disrespectful actions and intervene before it escalates • Discourage loitering • Any strangers in the hallway should have a visitor pass or ask if you can help them and direct them to get a pass in the office. • Effective one liners for hallway • It’s time to go to class • Keep moving, please • Hands, feet, and objects to yourself (or) Are you using safe hands and feet?
