  1. 11/16 Drill: Reflect & Respond • How would you define a “right”? • What examples can you think of in today’s society where this term is misused? Explain how it is misused. • What document “guarantees” our rights?

  2. Assessing prior knowledge WHAT IS FUNDAMENTALISM ? Does this term have a positive or negative connotation? What ideas/thoughts come to mind when you hear that someone is a “fundamentalist”?

  3. Fundamentalists: *those who advocate the replacement of secular law with religious law in accordance to literal translations of sacred texts.*deep and totalistic commitment to a belief in, and strict adherence to a set of basic principles (often religious in nature)

  4. Objectives: 11/19 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of fundamentalism and its effect on human rights by: *identifying at least 2 places in The Kite Runner where fundamentalism can be seen andby *stating how fundamentalism affects human rights. 2. Students will garner an appreciation for the human rights granted to them.

  5. Group Work Assignment • You will be divided into groups: • Each group will be given a pkt which contains the Taliban’s rules that are applied to men and women, and to women only. • Appoint your group roles: two speakers, one recorder, and one time/task keeper. • You will have 25 minutes to complete the activities.

  6. The Impact of Fundamentalism on Human Rights • 1. Read through the list of rules that pertain to you. As the speaker reads each rule aloud, decide in your group if any of you have violated or are in violation of that rule. If so, each member in the group will then highlight the rule he/she has violated. 2. When you are finished, answer the 7 questions that follow. The recorder should write down the group’s responses.

  9. Summary/Closure • Defined and discussed a “right” • Background information on fundamentalism • Broke into groups and looked at the Taliban’s rules. We examined how many of these rules we break on a daily basis. • Made generalizations about the impact fundamentalism has on human rights. • Analyzed the impact the activity had on our appreciation for the freedoms we have in the U.S.

  10. Where are we going? • Examine and discuss a document called the UDHR. • Read and discussed case studies (factual personal accounts) of people whose life was impacted by the fundamentalists. • Analyze the case studies to see what UDHR was violated.

  11. Exit • Turn to the person next to you and tell them one thing (“right”) from your daily routine that you have a better appreciation for after having done this activity. * Cite an example of fundamentalism as seen in the Kite Runner.
