  6. The Secret of Kells • Film is based on the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin containing the four Gospels of the New Testament located in Dublin, Ireland. • The film also draws upon Celtic mythology, examples include: CromCruach, a pre-Christian Irish deity and the reference to the poetic genre of Aislings, or vision poems, in which a poet is confronted by a dream or vision of a seeress, a woman who predicts events or developments, in the naming of the forest sprite encountered by Brendan.

  7. The Book of Kells • Medieval manuscript • Late 8th or early 9th century • Iona and Kells, on the Irish mainland • 680 surviving pages, only two have no decoration • Made by four scribes and three illuminators • 185 calves were slaughtered to make the vellum • Colors for paintings came from as far away as Afghanistan

  8. Spend time looking at it. See how much you can find. Can you find cats and mice? Do you find angels? What about a moth or butterfly? Chi-rho-iota (XPI) page, folio 34 recto of the Book of Kells, probably from Iona, Scotland, late eighth or early ninth century. Tempera on vellum, 1’ 1” X 9 1/2”. Trinity College Library, Dublin.
