  5. Want to Live? Take Care of Your Live-R • The liver plays a central role in good health • Many common health problems occur when the liver isn’t functioning properly • The root causes of most people’s health problems stem from the liver, digestive system and glands

  6. Meet Your Liver • Your liver: • Is the largest and most metabolically complex organ in your body • Serves as a warehouse for nutrients • Functions as a quality control center for digestion • Detoxifies your body of chemicals • Participates in your immune system Your liver is the harmonizing “doctor” of your internal health

  7. Liver Functions • Produces bile to emulsify and aid digestion of fats • Acts as a warehouse for the blood • Stores nutrients for release when they are needed • Serves as the body’s primary detoxification center (quality control lab) • Makes lipoproteins (cholesterol) to transport fats through the body • LDL takes fats to the tissues • HDL brings fats back to the liver • Plays a critical role in maintaining blood sugar levels • Acts as a secondary line of immune defense to protect the body from infection

  8. Your Body’s Three Lines of Immune Defense First: The mucus membranes of the digestive (and respiratory) passages are your body’s primary line of immune defense Second: All blood from the digestive tract is sent to the liver via the hepatic vein, making the liver the second line of immune defense. This allows the liver to process nutrients, filter toxins and send some toxins back to the digestive tract via the bile Third: Toxins getting past the liver into the blood cause glandular activity to increase to push toxins out of the body, making the glands the third line of defense

  9. Brilliant Body Assessment Liver/Hepatic Indications • Difficulty digesting certain foods (2) • Monthly female concerns (PMS, menstrual problems) (2) • Regular consumption of alcohol (5) • Food allergies (2) • Smoking (1) • Skin/complexion problems (2) • Feeling down, uninterested or moody (3) • Difficulty getting to sleep, lack of sleep (2) • Fewer than 2 bowel movements per day (1) • Daily consumption of fried foods (2) • Restless sleep or waking up frequently (2) • Feeling irritable or easily angered (2)

  10. Other Liver/Hepatic Indications • Stuffy or bloated feeling under right rib cage • Difficulty digesting fats • Difficulty getting to sleep at night • Groggy feeling in the morning, difficulty waking up • Chemical sensitivities • Environmental illness • Working around chemicals • Eye problems • Feeling ill, but nothing shows up on medical tests (hypochondria)

  11. Five Keys to a Healthy Liver • Minimize Exposure to Environmental Toxins • Use Herbs and Supplements That Support Liver Detoxification • Let Go of Anger and Resentment • Increase Your Intake of Antioxidants • Protect Your Liver with Hepatoprotective Herbs

  12. Key One: Minimize Exposure to Environmental Toxins • The liver detoxifies chemicals and toxins • The many chemicals, drugs and environmental toxins we are exposed to place a heavy burden on the liver • Reducing the amount of chemicals we’re exposed to gives our liver a break

  13. A Few Unpleasant Facts • According to the American Cancer Society, prior to the 20th century, only 1 out of 8,000 Americans got cancer • Since World War II, we have developed more than 80,000 chemicals • Now, 1 out of 3 people get cancer; cancer is also the leading cause of death between 45 and 75. • 80% of people’s exposure to chemicals occurs in the home • EPA reports that cleaning products commonly found in the home are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air pollution

  14. Causes of Death by Age 1999-2007 Source: Center for Disease Control webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/leadcaus10.html

  15. 7 Steps to “Detoxifying” Your Home • Look at the labels of all your cleaning supplies dispose of anything that is poisonous • Replace your supplies with non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning products (Nature’s Fresh line) • Don’t overuse disinfectants • Use non-toxic solutions to pest problems • Examine your personal care products and replace with organic and natural products • Clean your indoor air with houseplants (Boomerang Air and Surface Sanitizer) • Clean up your drinking water (Nature’s Spring)

  16. Nature’s Fresh Cleaning Products • Use natural surfactants and cleaning agents derived from plants • Use 100% recyclable plastics & packaging • pH neutral (non-corrosive & non-caustic) • Chemical-free • Dioxane-free • Phosphate-free • Biodegradable

  17. Other Harmful Influences to Avoid • Alcohol • Drugs • Food additives • Pesticides and other agricultural chemicals • Petrochemicals (gasoline, solvents) • Tobacco products • Chemicals in general

  18. Key Two: Use Herbs and Supplements That Support Liver Detoxification • The liver needs vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other phytonutrients to do it’s job properly • The more toxic the system, the more nutritional support the liver needs

  19. Liver Detoxification

  20. Symptoms of Sluggish Phase 1 Detox • Caffeine, alcohol and other chemical substances have long lasting effects • General symptoms of liver congestion • Late night insomnia • Groggy feeling in the morning • Stuffy, bloated abdomen • Generally not feeling “well”

  21. Sluggish Phase II • Taking certain herbs or supplements make you feel sick • “Healing crisis” • Toxemia during pregnancy • Excessive reactions to specific chemicals, toxins or other substances • Environmental illness

  22. Phase 2 Conjugation • In phase two of liver detoxification, toxins are attached to organic compounds to render them water soluble and ready for elimination • This process is called conjugation • There are six conjugation pathways • Amino acids (acylation) • Sugars (glucuronidation) • Glutathione (glutathione conjugation) • Methionine (methylation) • Sulfur (sulfation) • Acetyl Co-A (acetylation)

  23. Methylation • Methylation occurs in every cell of the body • Methylation is used to break down excess hormones (estrogen, etc.) and homocysteine • Poor methylation may be a contributing factor in heart disease, cancer, arthritis and PMS • Sam-e, B vitamins, choline and magnesium enhance methylation

  24. Sulfation • Principle pathway for eliminating excess neurotransmitters • Reduced sulfation may be involved in Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other nervous system disorders • Environmental illness may also involve reduced sulfation • Sulfur rich foods and herbs like garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, radishes, cauliflower, etc.) aid sulfation • The amino acids methinonine and cysteine and the supplement MSM also aid sulfation

  25. Other Liver Detoxification Supplements • Indole-3-Carbinol • Aids sulfation and glutathione conjugation • Enhances both Phase 1 and Phase 2 Detoxification • Helps break down estrogens (including xenoestrogens) • Milk Thistle Combination • Liver Balance • Heavy Metal Detox

  26. Key Three: Let Go of Anger and Resentment • In Traditional Chinese and Western medicine excessive anger and resentment are linked with liver problems • Supporting the liver can ease irritable and angry feelings • Letting go of anger and resentment through forgiveness can also help the liver to be healthy

  27. Forgiveness and Healing • Parallels between physical and emotional healing • The body has to detoxify to heal and so does the heart • Physical and emotional symptoms often mirror each other • What cleansing is to the body, forgiveness is to the heart

  28. Reasons to Forgive • When I “hold on” to what was lost, nothing can come into my life to replace it because energetically, I’m still attached to it • The anger, resentment and bitterness I feel destroys my own health and happiness • By “letting go” of what was lost, the law of the harvest means that I must receive something to replace what I gave • Besides, according to the “law of the harvest” I must forgive if I desire to be forgiven, so forgiveness sets me free

  29. A Forgiveness Journal • Get a blank notebook and turn it into a forgiveness journal • Write in it: • [your first name] forgives [person you need to forgive] completely • Do this for all the significant people in your life starting with: • Your father and mother • Your self • Your siblings • Former and current lovers and spouses

  30. Uncovering Buried Hurts • Do not assume that you don’t need to forgive anyone on your list • People who think their parents or childhood were perfect often find they have a lot to forgive • As you write, things will come to mind, add them to the writing: • [your name] forgives [person] completely for [a specific trespass that comes to mind]

  31. Key Four: Increase Your Intake of Antioxidants • Antioxidants protect the liver during the detoxification process • The eyes and the liver use more antioxidants than any other tissues • Eye problems can be an indication of poor liver health due to a lack of antioxidant nutrients

  32. Foods for Liver Health • Dark green leafy vegetables (Chard, beet greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, etc.) • Cruciferous vegetables • (Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) • Red beets • Lemon water • Black cherries, blueberries, and other sour fruits

  33. Glutathione • Glutathione is an intracellular antioxidant and one of the most important antioxidants in the body • It recycles other antioxidants • It helps to detoxify and eliminate poisons in the liver, lungs, intestines, and kidneys • It protects liver and eye health • Heavy metals inhibit the replenishment of glutathione • N-Acetyl-Cysteine is a precursor to glutathione and aids both liver and eye health

  34. Thai-Go • Sour fruits are said to tonify the liver chi in Chinese medicine • Many of the antioxidant fruits in Thai-Go are used in Chinese medicine for liver and eye problems • Thai-Go is an excellent liver protecting remedy

  35. Key Five: Protect Your Liver with Hepatoprotective Supplements • Certain herbs and nutrients can protect your liver from damage due to environmental toxins • If you are exposed to chemicals of any kind on a regular basis, it’s a good idea to use hepatoprotective supplements to support your liver • Examples: auto mechanic, house painter, beautician, dry cleaner, lawn care, non-organic farming, chemist, carpet cleaner, etc. Milk Thistle - Photo from Wikipedia
