Overview • Provides interdisciplinary knowledge & skills to integrate scientific, technological, social aspects of public health genetics • First program of its kind in the country (established 1996) • Interactions with students & faculty across all SPH departments Certificate in Public Health Genetics

  4. All areas of public health can be improved and expanded by examining the role of genetics in their discipline. Program Requirements • Four approved courses (11 credits total) • B grade or above in each class • One genomic science course • e.g., EPID 511 or 515 in Fall • One ethical/legal/social issues course • e.g., HBHE 669 in Winter • Two elective courses • e.g., epigenetics; nutrigenomics Certificate in Public Health Genetics

Possible Fall courses • EPID 511: Intro to PH Genetics (Marrs) • Tue-Thu 8:30-10:00 am • EPID 515: Genetics in Public Health (Smith) • Mon-Wed 10:00-11:30 am • HMP 630: The Business of Biology (Canter) • Mon-Wed 8:30-10:00 am • NUTR 638: Nutrigenomics (Seo) • Tue-Thu 1:30-3:00 pm Certificate in Public Health Genetics

Selected Winter courses • HBHE 669: Genetics, Health Behavior, & Health Education (Roberts) • BIOSTATS 665: Statistical Population Genetics (Zoellner) • EHS 660: Environmental Epigenetics (Dolinoy) • EPID 516: Genomics in Epidemiology (Smith) • EPID 621: Cancer Epidemiology (Mondul) • Research / application courses or independent study if sufficient genetics theme

  9. Internships • Not required for the certificate • But many prior students have completed genetics themed internships • State programs in newborn screening, genetic epidemiology • Research programs in statistical genetics • Program faculty, alumni can assist with finding placements

  10. Research Opportunities • Numerous SPH students have worked w/CPHG faculty on research projects • Part-time RA positions • Independent study (research) • Summer field placements
