  1. Foreign bodies in the nose and ear. Dr.P.T.Kenny.

  2. Removal of a foreign body from the nose. • Close the mouth and the other nostril and let the patient blow the nose or sneeze. • Try to remove the object with a paper clip bent to form a ‘spoon’. • Try to remove it with a ‘crocodile’ forceps. • Connect a piece of rubber tubing to a suction and try to suck out the object. • NB: Take care not to push the object in deeper, causing it to go down the throat and be aspirated!!!

  3. How to make a child sneeze…

  4. Removal of a foreign body from the ear canal. • Syringe the ear with lukewarm water, thus removing the object. • Try to remove the object with a bent paper clip, or a curette or a small skin hook. • Try using a suction with a short piece of rubber tubing connected to it. • NB: A good head lamp makes it much easier since you then have both your hands free. Take care not to damage the eardrum!!!

  5. Removing a live insect from the ear canal. • An insect only crawls forward. • First kill the insect by drowning it with water, or plant oil, or baby oil. • A good head lamp frees both hands for you to manipulate the ear with one hand and remove the insect with the other. • A bent paper clip, a curette, a ‘crocodile’ forceps or suction could help. • Syringing the ear might also remove the insect.
