  1. Prana - The Life Force By Swami Sukhabodhananda

  2. The word Pranaitself means constant motion and this describes perfectly its quality. Prana is not a breath, oxygen or air; nor is it a mere spiritual concept. It is very much a physical substance akin to electromagnetic or radioactive waves, present in a constant state of flux from the moment of our conception in the womb. It is the energy responsible for the bodys life, heat and maintenance

  3.  We all have a certain amount of Prana in our bodies which can be utilized in day-to-day activities throughout our lives. This invisible field of Prana is known as PranamayaKosha. There is also something like a universal Prana. Certain levels of Prana circulating through our system provide us with certain levels of health. If we have an excess of Prana, it can be transmitted to others for healing. Our brain requires the maximum amount of Prana. Deficiency leads to nervous depression or a nervous breakdown, the mind becomes unsteady and there are constant negative thoughts. Wherever there is disease or sickness in the body it is due to a lack of Prana in that region.

  4. The practice of Pranayama enables us to generate a higher quantum of Prana that can then be directed to the brain or any other parts where healing is required. The blood vessels that distribute blood are also channels which distribute Prana to all parts of the body. Deep breathing stimulates the blood circulation but it does not lead to an increase in brain stimulation. Therefore, by practicing certain techniques, we are able to generate Prana and direct it to the brain.

  5. Each individuals Prana is a part of that universal whole. Through practice, it is possible to unite yourself with that universal Prana. While Prana and breath are separate, union with the universal Prana is not possible without regulation of the breath. By controlling and regulation of the breath, the mind is controlled. With a mind in perfect control, an individuals awareness becomes one-pointed. This one-pointed awareness becomes manifest as white light that illuminates and envelops you. At this point, you can connect yourself with the universal Prana.

  6. Simple practices to increase Prana ShambhaviMudra: this is a very simple technique for conducting Prana to the frontal portion of the brain. Focus the pupils of the eyes on the spot between the eyebrows called the third eye, being aware of your breath and breathing gently as you do so.

  7. Kumbhaka: this is known as retention of breath. There are two points during the breathing process when this is done. At the first point, breathe in gently, fill your lungs with air and retain the breath at this point for as long as you are comfortable. Then, slowly exhale, empty the lungs and hold without breathing in or out for as long as you are comfortable. Retention from breathing in or out, firstly when the lungs are full and secondly when they are empty are so powerful that they can completely rejuvenate the brain.
