Recovery To lift the nation out of the depression through aid to farmers, businessmen, and workers Reform To eliminate abuses in the economy and to prevent future depressions through protection of bank depositors, investors, consumers, the aged, and the unemployed.

  5. FDCA Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act First Hundred Days Protected customers by proper labeling and advertising.

  6. FCIC Federal Crop Insurance Corporation First Hundred Days Provided inexpensive crop insurance to farmers.

  7. HOLC Home Owners Loan Corporation FDIC Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation First Hundred Days Provided low interest loans to homeowners facing bank failures. Protected depositors in case of bank failures.

  8. WPA Works Progress Administration First Hundred Days Provided jobs to unemployed artists, actors, sculptors, etc.

  9. NIRA National Industrial Recovery Act First Hundred Days Encouraged business recovery with codes of fair competition.

  10. PWA Public Works Administration First Hundred Days Provided work for the unemployed on public projects.

  11. REA Rural Electrification Act First Hundred Days Provided low-cost electricity to farm families.

  12. RTAA Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act First Hundred Days Increased foreign trade with the reciprocal lowering of tariffs.

  13. SEC Securities & Exchange Commission First Hundred Days Protected investors by supervising the issuing of securities and regulating the stock market.

  14. SSA Social Security Act First Hundred Days Protected workers with unemployment and old age insurance.

  15. TVA Tennessee Valley Authority First Hundred Days Improved the economic conditions in the Tennessee Valley through the development of hydroelectric power.

  26. Criticisms from the Right ... Social Security Act Some people felt that it penalized successful, hardworking people. Others saw it as the first step toward a militaristic and regimented society. They predicted that soon people would have to wear metal “dog tags” with their social security number.

  27. Legacy of the “New Deal” 1. Restored courage and optimism to the people and improved the economic status of most Americans.

  28. Legacy of the “New Deal” 2. Provided work relief, which enabled the unemployed to retain their self-respect and enriched the nation with roads, public buildings, dams, and parks.
