Building on the Past:History of theSportsmanship Council • Response to Big 10 commissioner’s concern • Student organization in Fall 1979 • Members included students, faculty, staff, alumni, and • administrators • First such organization in country • Funding from Athletics, Student Affairs, Alumni Societies, and • Office of the President • Coined the phrase “Best Fans in the Land”

  5. Goals • Formulate ideas and projects which promote good sportsmanship campus and city-wide • Establish the university as an environment which continually fosters camaraderie and good sportsmanship • Identify and address issues concerning sportsmanship and poor fan behavior

  6. Vision Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and all supporters of Ohio State athletics will be known throughout the country as the “Best Fans in the Land.” At all times and in all venues, home or away, Buckeye fans will demonstrate pride in The Ohio State University and its teams as well as respect for the opponent’s institution, teams, and supporters.
