  3. About You This semester I am teaching: • Grade 12 College Physics (SPH4C) • Grade 11 University Physics (SPH3U) • This class I can be available at lunch, in the morning after 8 am and in the afternoon until 3 pm. I can also be contacted via email: tara.rosebery@hwdsb.on.ca

Course Outline Department: Science Course Title: Science Course Code: SNC 1L1 Course Type: Essential Grade: 9 Credit Value: 1.0 Department Head: Mr. Curtis Instructor: Ms. RoseberyRevision Date: January 2013 Ministry Guidelines: The Ontario Locally Developed Compulsory Curriculum Course Description: This course enables students to develop a deeper understanding of basic concepts in biology, chemistry, life science, and physics; to develop practical skills in scientific inquiry; and to apply their knowledge of science to everyday situations.

  8. Assessment and Evaluation Labs & Activities: 50% Tests: 20% Culminating Activities: 15% (scheduled at the end of each unit) Final Exam: 15% Within the assessments of the course the following weightings will apply: Knowledge 35-45% Inquiry 35-45% Communication 5-10% Application 5-10%

  9. Mark Updates Marks will be posted (under your Markbook code name) on a regular basis (usually after unit tests and before mark reports).

  10. Course Strands • Scientific Inquiry: Science in Daily Life • Chemistry: What’s it Made Of? • Biology: Is it Alive? • Physics: What Makes it Go? (The 1st strand will be integrated and assessed with the other 3 strands.)

  11. Scientific Inquiry: Big Ideas • Science is part of our daily lives. • There is a relationship between science and our daily lives. • A variety of skills are needed to investigate problems.

  12. Chemistry: Big Ideas • Matter can be classified according to its physical characteristics. • The particle theory of matter helps to explain the physical characteristics of matter. • Elements and compounds have specific properties that determine their use.

  13. Biology: Big Ideas • Cells are the basis of life. • Cells organize into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into organ systems, and organ systems into organisms. • Healthy cells contribute to healthy organisms. • Systems are interdependent.

  14. Physics: Big Ideas • Electrical energy can be transformed into other forms of energy. • Electrical energy plays a significant role in society, and its production has an impact on the environment. • Systems are designed to accomplish tasks. • Systems have an input and an output. • Systems are designed to optimize human and natural resources.

  15. Lab Safety Sheets Lab Safety Sheets must be signed and returned before you can do any lab activities in this class.
