  2. Life • Russian, born in 1944 • Died in 1908 • Wealthy family life, educated and musical • Attended concerts growing up

  3. Navy life Nikolay became a Navy cadet in 1856. As a cadet, he also was trained in music. One was Korsakov’s heroes was a very prominant russian composer, Mily Balakirev who is pictured above.

Compositions and Teaching Korsakov did not know the rules of advanced music theory or part writing. 1865: Wrote first symphony. 1872: Wrote first opera. 1871: Was appointed professor of Composition and Instrumentation at St. Petersburg Conservatory In order to succeed, he taught himself the rules of music theory and orchestral writing.

  5. Sheherazade One of Korsakov’s most famous pieces, Sheherazade. Based on the Persian story, A Thousand and One Nights Story line: The sultan is going to execute his wife, Sheherazade. The only way for her to stay alive is by telling her husband a story. The story has many cliffhangers, which will hopefully lead to her staying alive.
