For more information on a branch, contact a recruiter specific to that field. High School Diploma or equivalent required to enlist and a specified ASVAB test score ✶ ✶

Workforce and Apprenticeships Joining an apprenticeship program ✱ ✱ ✱ ✱ Directly entering the workforce Apprenticeship- An education opportunity in which students gain skills related to a specific trade through supervision and classroom instruction. Have a postsecondary career in mind and have taken the necessary steps to prepare for that position. • Have possibly attended Central Nine • Could currently be doing on the job training • Plan on contributing to a family business after graduation • 3-5 year program • Receive wages, benefits, & education • Can lead to an Associates Degree or Technical Certificate through Ivy Tech • Must be at least 18 years old and have a High School Diploma or GED Contact the Indiana Department of Workforce Development for more information on available apprenticeship programs and how to apply for one.

Post Secondary Schooling ~ 4-Year Schools ~ Community Colleges Ex) Ivy Tech, Vincennes University • Gain an Associates Degree or Technical Certificate • Easily transfer acquired credit to a 4-year college or university Public Colleges Ex) Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State University • State money allows these institutions to be more affordable to Indiana residents. ~ 2-Year Schools ~ Private Colleges Ex) Butler University, Wabash College, University of Notre Dame and other out-of-state institutions. • More expensive than State schools, but offer private scholarships to help subsidize the cost. Technical & Online Colleges Ex) ◾ ITT Tech ◾ Indianapolis Art Institute ◾ Kaplan, DeVry, Brown Mackie Can be proprietary schools, or “for-profit.” Focuses more on taking the essential classes for a trade and less on the “college experience.” Most 2-year schools do not require an SAT/ACT score. They provide their own aptitude testing. 4-year schools require an ACT or SAT score, along with a good high school GPA and a challenging course load.

  9. College Visits Start Now! • Utilize the 2 college visit days wisely • Visit colleges over spring break • Visit colleges during the summer, schedule an overnight stay if possible. • Attend the Greater Indianapolis Southside College Fair hosted by UIndy on March 11th starting at 6:30 pm

  10. Scheduling a College Visit • Use the college website to register online or by phone for visit • Notify Mrs. Linhart in attendance of the date student will miss • Upon return, provide documentation from the college to Mrs. Linhart, which will change the attendance code to CV for college visit

Additional admissions and financial aid information is available as well. - Math and Science Tests are free - English, Social Studies, Music Theory tests - $81 each - Free and Reduced Students acquire all tests at no cost - AP Fund is available for other students if necessary

  23. Dual Credit Options at WCHS Ivy Tech Classes taught by Ivy Tech Professors and offered at WCHS: • English Composition • Fundamentals of Public Speaking • Intro to Psychology • Intro Sociology Courses can cost up to $180 for 3 credit hours.

  24. Dual Credit Options, Cont’d. Courses taught by WCHS teachers for Dual Credit: • AP US History – dual credit through ISU • Adv. Telecommunications – dual credit through USI • Adv. Computer Applications – dual credit through Vincennes • Computer Programming – dual credit through Vincennes • AP Biology - dual credit through Indiana University • AP Chemistry - dual credit through Indiana University Courses are $25 per credit hour and range from $75-$125. Students on free/reduced lunch can have tuition fees waived.

Scheduling • Timeline • Counselors visit US History classes Nov. 12th-14th • For these students, schedule sheets turned in by Nov. 26th • Can access online scheduling in PowerSchool November 12th- January 6th • Resources • 2014-2015 Curriculum Guide will be available online Nov. 12th • WCHS→ Guidance→ Academic Information • Strength of Senior Schedule/ Finding Balance • #1 thing colleges look for is course selection • Colleges will ask for senior schedule on application • Make sure student is taking required classes for college (for example, must have pre-calculus for IU) • Find balance

  26. Scheduling continued • Junior Interviews • After winter break • Making Changes • Students and parents will be able to make changes in PowerSchool until Jan. 6th • After Jan. 6th, changes can still be made by contacting your counselor • All changes must be made by June 1st
